Cop goes home to wrong apartment, kills man inside

Dallas officer enters apartment thinking it’s her own fatally shoots man inside

Dallas police said on Friday that the officer, whose name is yet to be released, fatally shot Jean, her neighbour, after entering his apartment, claiming that she mistakenly took his apartment for hers and that she was convinced that Jean was an intruder.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. Thursday.

The police officer had arrived at the apartment complex near downtown Dallas after working a full shift and was still in uniform when she entered Jean's apartment, thinking it was hers, the Dallas Morning News reported. She acknowledged that many questions remain about the shooting and asked the public to give investigators enough time to get to the answers.

She said everyone loved her son, and he loved them all right back.

"Still super suspect! I don't care how exhausted I am, I know where I live!"

Jean described himself on LinkedIn as a "young professional, engaged in developing a career built upon integrity, dedication and relationships, leveraging useful technologies to gain an understanding of and add value in a range (of) industries, striving towards leadership in my career, my community, and society".

Fellow officers were called to the scene where they administered first aid to the 26-year-old victim.

"Botham loved mankind", Jean's mother, Allison said to those gathered.

Her name is Amber Guyger , and interestingly, she was also involved in the shooting of a suspect in 2017, according to a report. As a result of the information above, an arrest warrant is being obtained for the officer involved in this incident.

Hall says the Texas Rangers will conduct an independent investigation. But Merritt said they wanted Guyger "to be treated like every other citizen, and where there is evidence that they've committed a crime, that there's a warrant to be issued and an arrest to be made".

One of Jean's uncles, Earl Jean, took to Facebook to remember his nephew. "Please join us in praying for Botham's friends and family", Harding University said in the statement Friday.

Jean was shot by the uniformed police officer who "fired her weapon striking the victim", according to a police report.

Sgt. Warren Mitchell, a spokesperson for the Dallas Police Department, says he can't yet explain how the situation involving the off-duty officer and Jean escalated to the shooting.

Harding University President Bruce McLarty shared his favorite memory of Jean with students in chapel Friday morning.

"This is a bad tragedy", Jean's employer said.

Allison also revealed that she was visiting NY when she received a call informing her that Botham had been killed in his own apartment. "Usually if you kill someone, you don't go home on paid leave".

Harding University, a private university in Searcy, Arkansas, said Jean was a native of the Caribbean country St. Lucia and often led worship services at the school's campus. So far, they have drawn the officer's blood to test for alcohol or drugs and they are in the process of getting a warrant for manslaughter.
