Donald Trump says he will testify before Bob Mueller 'under certain circumstances'

Rudy Giuliani

Negotiations between Trump's legal team and the special counsel's office have been going on for months, this time around Mueller has agreed to show flexibility on many of his terms, including accepting some answers in written from the president, they would be open to accept follow-up questions in person.

"We have said we would agree to written questions on Russian Federation after we review questions but no further commitment on interviews".

As Rudy Giuliani says Trump will not voluntarily answer any questions about obstruction, Axios reports that the president's legal team is banking on the idea that Mueller doesn't have the heart to go through the extensive legal battle it would take to issue a subpoena.

Giuliani also told Politico that a deal is near for the president to provide written responses to Mueller's questions.

Trump's comments aboard Air Force One came a day after his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, gave conflicting comments about whether Trump would answer certain questions from Mueller.

"It would be in written form and if you want to follow up on our answers, justify it", he said.

However, he later told NBC News those questions are "not ruled in or out", and told Politico that "We're very opposed to that, [but] we're not closing it off 100 percent". "Show us why you didn't get there the first time", Giuliani said.

"We aren't going to let them spring it on us", said Giuliani, who has served as lawyer-spokesman for the president's personal legal team, using television interviews and public comments as a tactic in the negotiations.

Mr. Mueller's team raised the prospect in March that it could subpoena the President, although this would unquestionably prompt a court fight.

After the interview takes place, that is if it takes place, investigators would eventually send their findings to lawmakers who would then decide the next step.

Trump, in a Fox News interview taped ahead of a Thursday night rally in Montana, was noncommittal when asked about a possible Mueller interview.

Donald Trump has said he could meet with the special counsel investigating Russia's supposed meddling in USA elections. The probe's opponents slammed it as judicial overreach, and Trump himself has always been calling the entire investigation a "witch hunt".

Jay Sekulow, another Trump attorney, also stressed that discussions with Mueller's office are still in progress. He told the Associated Press earlier that they were "a no-go".
