Novak Djokovic sweeps aside del Potro in US Open final

Championship preview del Potro vs. Djokovic

A clinical Novak Djokovic dismissed Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3 7-6 (4) 6-3 to collect his third U.S. Open title on Sunday, giving him 14 Grand Slams to move into a tie for third on the all-time list alongside Pete Sampras.

Brace yourself for a stunning men's singles final between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro.

With the win now, Djokovic has extended his head-to-head record against Del Potro to 15-4 as the Argentine was unable to upstage the Serb.

Over the past eight weeks Djokovic has resembled the player that held all four major titles at the same time in 2016 and the $3.8 million ($A5.3 million) winner's cheque lifted him above Federer as the leader in career prize money. "And so, so happy to be playing the final against this magnificent idol".

The U.S. Open championship took his resurgence a step further.

After taking just two points off Del Potro's first three service games, Djokovic, in his eighth final in NY and 23rd at the majors, pounced to break for 5-3.

Leading 4-3, Djokovic caught Del Potro off guard with his exceptional patience and strong strokes to break Del Potro's serve.

While Djokovic's athleticism graced the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Del Potro was buoyed by the "Delpo, Delpo" chants of his friends who have reverberated the stadium throughout the tournament.

The Argentine was forced to dig deep at the beginning of the second set, saving two break points as the 31-year-old peppered his weaker side with cross-court backhand-to-backhand rallies.

"I was playing nearly at my limit all the time, looking for winners with my forehands, backhands, and I couldn't make them because Novak was there every time", Del Potro said.

The Serb appeared to be on course for an easy victory when he went up a break in the second set to go up 6-3, 3-1. Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and Andy Murray have now won 50 of the past 55 Grand Slams.

The effort took its toll on a suddenly weary-looking Del Potro as a 95-minute set was claimed by Djokovic in the tiebreak.

Djokovic glared at the crowd and tossed his hands up in disbelief after losing one 16-shot rally, then he steadied himself and fended off three game points that would have given del Potro a two-game lead in the set.

The third and final set almost followed the same script, as Djokovic again broke del Potro to take a 3-1 lead only for the Argentinian to break back and level the set at 3-3.

But the twist of the tale happened when leading 4-3, Djokovic broke Del Potro yet again to enforce a third break in the third set and set up the match on his serve.
