Trump Administration Reportedly Met With Venezuela Military Coup Plotters

His remarks came in response to a report by the New York Times on Saturday which said unnamed American officials held talks with a former Venezuelan military commander to stage a coup, but Washington eventually decided against supporting the bid.

U.S. officials met secretly with Venezuelan military officers who were plotting a coup against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, both a current and a former United States official confirmed to CNN.

In response, National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis said in a statement that "the United States government hears daily the concerns of Venezuelans from all walks of life". Those words inspired rebellious Venezuelan officers to reach out during the nation's economic collapse, but USA officials say the Venezuelans lacked specific ideas and hoped the Americans would offer a plan.

Officials from President Donald Trump's administration reportedly met secretly with Venezuelan military officials to discuss plans to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro.

"Right there in U.S. media, new and disgusting evidence is there to see", he said.

"The United States government hears daily the concerns of Venezuelans from all walks of life - be they members of the ruling party, the security services, elements of civil society or from among the millions of citizens forced by the regime to flee overseas".

Around the same time, he said publicly that he would not rule out a "military option" to end the chaos there.

But US officials finally felt the meetings were worth the risk as they watched the crisis in the Latin American country worsen, the Times reported.

Maduro was elected despite outcry from almost a dozen nations, and has grown more unpopular as Venezuela continues in an economic tailspin, experiencing hyperinflation, severe power cuts, and food and medicine shortages.

The NY Times article claims that "in the fall of 2017, the diplomat reported that the Venezuelans didn't appear to have a detailed plan and had shown up at the encounter hoping the Americans would offer guidance or ideas".

The U.S. side has also announced several rounds of sanctions against Venezuelan government officials ever since.

U.S. -Venezuelan relations have been strained for years.

Officials say the White House ultimately declined to back the coup plotters, and the coup never took place.
