Atlantic Hurricane Season: From Zero to 2017 with Florence, More

East Coast Braces For Possible Category 4 Hurricane Florence, Tropical Storm Isaac Develops In Atlantic |

A west-northwestward motion with an increase in forward speed is expected during the next couple of days.

Hurricane Helene is moving west-northwest over the eastern Atlantic and is strengthening quickly over the tropical Atlantic. That Category 4 storm destroyed 15,000 buildings and killed 19 people in North Carolina.

Helene: The 5:00am advisory on Hurricane Helene has the storm with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour.

"Florence is expected to be an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday", the NHC said.

Forecasts indicated potential for strengthening towards category five hurricane over the next 48 hours, though increasing southwesterly shear over SE U.S.A make cause a little weakening before landfall. It's expected to become at least a Category 3 hurricane before it hits the mainland US around SC and North Carolina, likely on Friday morning, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Monday.

He says the federal government is ready to respond to the Category 4 storm.

As the storm advanced, Monday afternoon was a postcard-perfect day on Holden Beach with bright blue skies, placid puffy clouds and light breezes.

"Further strengthening is anticipated, and Florence is expected to be an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday", the National Hurricane Center said. "Up in the clouds, water condenses and forms droplets, releasing even more heat to power the storm". The storm is expected to strengthen a bit, but turn to the north in the central Atlantic.

Feltgen said it's important that people don't get "hung up on the cone", and prepare for the possibility of impacts in areas outside of it.

It has been a quieter-than-average hurricane season so far, but things are picking up in a big way: three hurricanes are churning in the Atlantic, with Hurricane Florence rapidly approaching the US East Coast.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference his state was in "the bull's eye".

Helene - now just southeast of the Cabo Verde islands off the African coast - had winds of 136km/h, and was expected to turn northwest and then north into the open Atlantic by midweek, the NHC said. The National Hurricane Center predicts the storm will be a Category 4 by Tuesday or Wednesday, and it's possible that it could become a Category 5 at some point.

North Carolina's governor issued what he called a first-of-its-kind mandatory evacuation order for North Carolina's fragile barrier islands from one end of the coast to the other. Main impacts with these storm are going to life-threatening storm surge, flooding, damaging hurricane-force winds, and unsafe rip currents along the East Coast.

The coastal surge from Florence could leave the eastern tip of North Carolina under more than 9 feet of water in spots, projections showed.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued a tropical storm watch for Antigua and Montserrat.

Closest to home for many Canadians, the active Atlantic has been capturing attention this week, as the destructive Hurricane Florence roars toward the coast of the southern United States.

"Satellite imagery indicates that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 105 miles per hour (165 km/h) with higher gusts", the NHC said in its latest advisory.

Issac became the fifth hurricane of this season on Sunday night when it was around 1,300 miles east of the Windward Islands.
