Basketball WNBA: Seattle sacred for the 3rd time

Storm forward Breanna Stewart is all smiles during warmups before the Seattle Storm take on the Washington Mystics for game two of the WNBA Finals at Key Arena in Seattle Sunday

The Storm were lead by 2018 MVP Breanna Stewart, who averaged 20.0 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

The Mystics' success arrived two weeks early for their infrastructure, too. Unfortunately for the home team, Seattle immediately responded with an 8-0 run and coasted the rest of the way.

Now in its 22 season, the league continues its struggle for mainstream support. "I know she made me a better coach". Though the floor of the arena, the home gym of George Mason University, boasts the imported red, white and blue signage of the Mystics, the 10,000 seats surrounding the court alternate from green to yellow - Storm-like colors.

That construction schedule manifested in an unplanned postseason barnstorming of our local Atlantic 10 basketball arenas.

The Mystics, in their first Finals in franchise history, were far from disgraced rallying from 18 points down to trail 72-67 with 6:49 remaining. Sue Bird can still do it, even at the age of 37 and being the oldest player in the WNBA just got a storybook ending to a fantastic career. Despite being down two-games-to-none, backs against the wall, energy and optimism abounded. We stayed laser (focused) through the whole season nonstop. Our team has handled it.

Stewart was unanimously selected to the All-WNBA First Team on Wednesday, the league announced at halftime of the game, the only player in the WNBA to be named on all 39 ballots.

Before the game, Thibault seemed to understand what his team was up against; where it might struggle; what it could learn for next year and beyond.

"I mean, it was different", Delle Donne acknowledged. We can build on this. "We were champions again". "But it won't be the end of the world if we don't". We have a relatively young team.

That won't take away from the most successful season in franchise history, though.

She became the sixth player in WNBA history to be named regular season and Finals MVP in the same year, joining last year's victor Sylvia Fowles (2017), former Storm star Lauren Jackson (2010), Phoenix's Diana Taurasi (2009) and a pair of legends in Lisa Leslie (2001) and Cynthia Cooper (1997, 1998).

"It's incredible to be sitting here right now", the 17-year veteran said (via the Seattle Times).

Part of that is simple recognition.

Check out the brand new t-shirt - which honors the Storm's previous titles and their current roster - below. "It's probably going to get a little harder from here to be honest, but I think she's ready for it". "A lot of times, people who are not fans of the WNBA have never been to a game, never seen a game".

Some of Seattle's other professional sports teams also were cheering on the Storm.

"We don't feel like we peaked and this is it for us", Elena Delle Donne said. "And I hope that we can do it many, many more times". "When you know what can go wrong, you kind of overthink it".

When Breanna Stewart left the University of CT after winning an unprecedented four straight NCAA titles, coach Geno Auriemma said that she might be the best of a long list of former UConn icons who have become WNBA All-Stars, Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers. "They are going to play that way offensively, they're going to play that way defensively".

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan tweeted about the celebration Wednesday night after the big win.
