Inbox, Google’s playground for email innovation, is going bye-bye

Google is Killing Inbox

For me, Inbox was an attempt to simplify email and while it certainly had some interesting features, Inbox was too simplified and not really usable because of that.

The launch of the new Gmail in April was surely a sign that Inbox, Google's productivity-focused mail app, would soon meet its demise.

According to a report by Fast Company, Google is giving its popular bundled email client service, Inbox the axe early next year.

Inbox has pioneered numerous features that are now part of the new Gmail.

According to a Google blog posted today, if you use Inbox, it will still be functional at least until the end of March 2019. In the new Gmail, you'll find workflows that are similar to your favourite ones in Inbox. Google rolled out a complete redesign of Gmail in April this year incorporating almost off the key features of Inbox.

Google said it wants to focus exclusively on Gmail, which has recently adopted a number of Inbox's features like smart replies and snoozing emails. It was conceived with mobile devices in mind and ditched a decade's worth of Gmail cruft in favor of tools focused on email efficiency, such as the way it displayed attachments right in the inbox view and incorporated a built-in task manager.

Google will remove Gmail Offline from the Chrome Web Store on December 3, 2018.

Bad news is that some features are not available on Gmail and that Inbox users may have to use suggested alternatives, e.g. labels or filters, or stop using certain features as they are not available. It's a service many of us use every single day. Google has not revealed the exact date of the shut down but it has created a transition guide to help the users of Inbox shift to Gmail.

What do you think about Google killing support for Inbox? All your conversations are already waiting for you in Gmail.
