Latest Windows 10 Build Interrupts Firefox and Chrome Installations

Windows 10 warning for Google Chrome

Microsoft has started to test a new feature in Windows 10 Insider builds that displays a message promoting Microsoft edge when a user attempts to install a competing browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Vivaldi, or Opera.

As Ghacks reports, triggering the installation of Firefox or Chrome will see a screen pop up reminding users that Microsoft Edge is already available to use.

The user is then given the option to stick with Microsoft Edge (highlighted in blue as the default setting) or "Install anyway" - which doesn't sound alarmist at all.

Microsoft is reportedly warning Windows 10 users not to install Chrome or Firefox.

Currently, the warning is only present in fast ring test versions of Windows 10 via the Windows Insider Program.

For years now, Microsoft has been fighting what really feels like a losing battle against Google and Mozilla, two big players in the internet browser space. Since this is an A/B test, not all installations of Build 17755 show this prompt. That's the question Microsoft keeps asking itself, and like the lead in a romantic comedy, it's trying its darndest to make sure you take it back, rather than falling for the superficial charms of hunky Firefox or the Chrome lothario. The software simply installs as you would expect it to. How do you get those people to give Edge a chance? This was also confirmed by a Microsoft spokesperson to ZDNet.

This isn't the first time that Microsoft has attempted to sway users toward its browser. For example, Microsoft has used the "tips, tricks, and suggestions" feature-again, enabled by default-to suggest you use Edge with intrusive pop-ups on your taskbar. However, Microsoft hasn't been successful in doing so and the market share numbers are the proof of that. Most Windows 10 users click through all these annoying prompts and use Chrome instead.

People talk about how Google pushes Chrome, but that's pretty different. We wish Google would quit nagging people so much too, but Microsoft is going too far.

WTF?! As demonstrated by the methods it used to get people onto Windows 10, Microsoft isn't averse to using shady tactics when pushing its products. So maybe you should make Edge a better browser instead of thinking up new ways to shove it in our faces.
