Trump dismisses Woodward book as 'joke'

Assad regime shells Syria's Idlib

Woodward sat down with Perino to discuss his tell-all, which went on sale on Tuesday and has been widely discussed.

The Watergate legend said the president called him last month saying he wished he had been interviewed for the book.

"People better wake up to what's going on", Woodward said of the White House during an interview about his new book on CBS News' "Sunday Morning".

During his 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump told supporters that he would eliminate the federal debt during his eight years in office.

Former White House staff secretary Rob Porter says that Woodward offers a "selective and often misleading portrait" of the president and his administration.

Woodward said the book reveals shocking details about the inner-workings of Donald Trump's administration, but the most shocking parts are centered around the president's willingness to break with long-standing policy traditions.

Colbert, who said he read every page of the book himself, also said he particularly loved the last line, in which Woodward said Trump lawyer John Dowd "knew he could not bring himself to say to the president, 'you're a [expletive] liar".

"It's pretty disgusting, that's pretty sad", he told the news outlet, adding: "Perhaps its a disgruntled person who's been thrown out because they didn't deliver on what they were supposed to do".

He gives one example of a National Security Council meeting that happened about a year after Trump took the White House. But I really appreciate their statement.

"The Woodward book is a scam", Trump tweeted on Friday.

The book includes a conversation between Trump and a "friend who had acknowledged some bad behavior toward women". "And the U.S. "must stop payments to Pakistan until they cooperate", Trump said.

"These are political statements to protect their jobs - totally understandable", Woodward said. "The Dems are going insane!"

On Monday, Trump tweeted that "the Woodward book is a Joke - just another assault against me, in a barrage of assaults, using now disproven unnamed and anonymous sources".

Trump and several members of his administration were quoted have called the book "fiction and fabrication".

In recent days, Trump has accused Woodward of making up quotes and mused about changing USA libel laws in an effort to better position himself to seek "retribution". Dems can't stand losing.

Infuriated by the unsigned missive, Mr Trump on Friday urged Mr Sessions to launch an investigation to uncover the author's identity, citing "national security" concerns.

In his interview with NPR, Woodward also addresses the anonymous op-ed published in The New York Times shortly after the first excerpts of his book were circulating.
