SpaceX gets first private passenger for moon trip

SpaceX announced late Thursday evening that it had penned its first ever private passenger to fly around the moon in its new Big Falcon Rocket (BFR).

In a step that commercialises space travel, USA private space firm SpaceX on Friday announced that it will send the first private passenger to Moon and will reveal his identity on Monday.

Who will be the first to take a seat aboard the Big Falcon Rocket - a privately funded reusable rocket ship developed by SpaceX previous year, weighing in at 4.4 million kilos?

SpaceX started talking about a crewed moon mission previous year, and as usual, it claimed a very ambitious timeline.

SpaceX has already posted a link to the webcast event, which will go live on September 17th and 6 PM PT. The original 2018 launch ended up delayed as it took longer than expected to get the Falcon Heavy ready for flight. On a Twitter thread underneath the main announcement, a verified Twitter account attributed to CEO Elon Musk tweeted a picture of a Japanese flag.

Hurricane Florence: Astronaut photos of the giant storm from space
"Cameras outside the International Space Station captured dramatic views of rapidly strengthening Hurricane Florence at 8:10 a.m. The satellite's MODIS instrument also detected "thick rings of powerful storms" swirling around the eye of the hurricane.

"We've been approached to do a crewed mission beyond the moon from some private individuals", he said at the time.

In June this year, it was reported the mission had been postponed until 2019 at the earliest. But Musk has broad ambitions for SpaceX and the BFR.

More details would be made available on Monday, it said. The company added that it will name the passenger and their reasons for flying on Monday.

The rocket in combination with a spaceship capsule is being built by SpaceX with the colonization of the planet Mars in mind.

US President Donald Trump has championed plans to put boots on the Moon again, as NASA works on building a lunar gateway that would serve as a launching point for missions heading even further into deep space, such as asteroids or Mars.
