Michelle Guthrie Considering Legal Action After Shock Axing From Top ABC Job

Australia

Morrison said it wasn't his place to comment on the efficacy of Guthrie as managing director, again pointing to the board as the folks in charge of that call.

Appointed to the role in May 2016, Guthrie was the ABC's first female managing director.

Multiple editorial complaints were lodged by the Prime Minister's Office and by Communications Minister Mitch Fifield during Ms Guthrie's tenure.

Michelle Guthrie responded to the announcement of her sacking saying she was "devastated" and considering her legal options after " the board's decision to terminate my employment despite no claim of wrongdoing on my part". She wasn't asked and didn't speak directly about her time at News Corp, but she did address questions about a partial commercialisation of the ABC, which we and others have speculated could be on the cards given her commercial experience.

"I recognise the challenges involved in transitions of this kind but I am honoured to accept the board's invitation and look forward to working with our outstanding people to execute our strategy".

Guthrie gave her first interview since her appointment to the ABC's News 24 this morning.

'Excellent decision, ' Ms Neighbour wrote. "This is entirely a board decision". And, perhaps more importantly, is the appointment of a person who has spent the past four years looking after relationships with advertisers at Google a prelude to at least a partial commercialisation of the assets of the ABC?

Mr Milne conceded Ms Guthrie had done a "pretty good" job turning the ABC towards its digital future.

She posted a statement two hours after the ABC announced she had been sacked and added that "at no point have any issues been raised with me" about her staffing changes.

David Anderson who is now ABC's head of specialist and factual will stand in as the interim managing director.

Have you been following stories about the ABC recently? Philosophy. Art. Science. These are the historic practices of which we should be most proud, of which we are most proud even if we don't concede it, and if our institutions fail to honour them, or take a dump on them, then we lose our trust in these institutions.

Guthrie went on to say while her contract, which was set to conclude on July 4 2021, can be terminated without immediate effect and without cause, she felt there was "no justification" for use of the clause.

"This includes refocusing daily journalism away from lifestyle content and "clickbait" and back towards news and current affairs", the union said.

In an internal email to staff, the ABC said the board had given "long and detailed consideration to this serious matter".

He said it was an honour to lead the corporation.
