Oculus Won't Lock You Out Of Games With Future Headsets

Facebook announced its newest VR headset that will ship next year.

Why it matters: Project Santa Cruz is now Oculus Quest, Facebook's next standalone VR headset.

As you can see from the photo and video above, the Oculus Quest consists of a headset and two motion controllers.

Oculus vice president Hugo Barra said Quest combined the capabilities of Rift and the portability of Go, the current headgear in the company's lineup, with a strong focus on games.

But what's unclear is whether enterprise developers will be looking at Oculus headsets for corporate use cases.

Originally known as Santa Cruz, the Oculus Quest supposedly represents Oculus' attempt to deliver the holy grail of VR - wireless usage, built-in tracking, solid performance, and no need for a PC. The Go is meant to make good VR affordable, the Quest provides a standalone experience with high-quality Rift-like experiences and the Rift can connect to a PC for the highest-end experiences possible.

Zuckerberg also pledged to port many PC-based VR games and apps to the Quest, bringing the device closer to the higher-end PC-based Oculus Rift.

Right now, it's a little unclear what the future of VR looks like in the PC space.

Mobile VR headsets - what are your best options?

Standalone VR headsets have been done before, but they've typically been powered by a smartphone or a processor made for smartphones.

Standalone VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive Pro do their job brilliantly but both come at a premium.

However, in a rare self-deprecating moment on stage, Zuckerberg recalled setting a goal of getting a billion people into virtual reality after buying Oculus some four years ago in a deal valued then at $2 billion - before admitting things hadn't gone according to plan. Building lower-cost headgear and focusing more on indie titles (Beat Saber, for example, is a fabulous game) may be a better way to build the nascent VR ecosystem.
