Trump Confirms Rejecting Trudeau's Meeting Invite: 'I Told Him 'Forget About It''

President Trump said Wednesday that he rejected a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the United Nations General Assembly

President Trump announced on Wednesday he rejected a meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister this week, as the countries struggle to strike a new North American trade agreement before a self-imposed October deadline.

"Yeah, I did", he told a news conference in NY when asked by a reporter whether he had rejected a one-on-one meeting with Trudeau.

"His tariffs are too high and he doesn't seem to want to move and I've told him forget about it", Trump said of Trudeau.

"We're very unhappy with the negotiations and the negotiating style of Canada".

Trudeau spokeswoman Chantal Gagnon said: "No meeting was requested".

"I must be honest with you, we're not getting along at all with their negotiators", Trump said.

On Tuesday, Lighthizer - also in NY for the UN General Assembly - said while the two sides remain far apart on a number of issues, the two sides have agreed for now to deal with the issue of 232 tariffs separately.

Trump said he does not have a good relationship with Canada's diplomatic delegation, including foreign minister Chrystia Freeland.

McNaughton suggested the two sides were deadlocked over US demands to scrap NAFTA's Chapter-19 mechanism for resolving anti-dumping and anti-subsidy disputes, the continued imposition of American "national-security" tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, and the threat of tariffs on auto exports from here.

"One of the things in my many conversations with President Trump on the issue of 232 tariffs ... was his insistence that while if we renegotiate NAFTA, if we get to a NAFTA deal, there will be no need to worry about these other things", Trudeau said at the UN.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trudeau shrugged off USA pressure to quickly agree to a deal and indicated it was possible the three member nations might fail to conclude a new pact.

Canada is facing another USA deadline to make a deal: the end of the month.

Trump went on to criticize Canadian officials and how they have negotiated during the recent NAFTA talks.

Trudeau's interactions with the mercurial US president have been a subject of great curiosity over the course of his three days at the General Assembly.

The Canadian leader added existing U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium, which were implemented in late May, would have to be scrapped before Canada felt confident in signing a new NAFTA agreement.

"Canada will come along", Trump said, before again threatening to tax Canadian auto imports if the Trudeau government didn't come around.

The official declined to be named because the matter has not yet been made public. The administration is looking to inform Congress of a plan for a new North American trade agreement by Sunday, which would allow Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to sign it on November 30, his last day in office.
