US warns Russia over missile defence for Syria

A computer simulation purports to show Israeli jets near to the Russian reconnaissance plane shown in red before it was accidentally shot down

"We are trying to find every place we can where there is common ground, where we can work with the Russians", adding that there were many areas where Moscow was working against the United States and "we will hold them accountable".

"Not only Syrian air defense will become more capable, but it will be necessary to keep in mind the presence of Russian operators at the Syrian air defense systems".

Amos Yadlin, a former head of Israeli military intelligence, tweeted that the Russian accusation Israel was to blame for the Russian plane being shot down was "fake news.meant to assuage diplomatic pressures and cloud the responsibility of Syrian and Russian officers for downing the plane".

"A modern S-300 air defence missile system will be transferred to the Syrian armed forces within two weeks", he said.

"It is quite clear that the missile was targeting the Israeli jet", he noted.

However, the missile then suddenly changed its course and "locked on a target with a larger radar cross-section and slower speed", which was the Russian reconnaissance plane coming in for landing.

The Russian IL-20 surveillance plane crashed near Latakia in northern Syria.

Moscow said relations with Israel had been "damaged" by the downing of the plane and the deaths of the 15 personnel aboard.

Moscow has been a key ally of Mr. Assad in Syria's brutal civil war and is positioned to have a major say in the country's future as the government appears to be near victory over the leading rebel groups. Israel denies that allegation and says its planes had already returned to Israeli airspace when the air-defense missile was sacked.

Russian Federation has blamed Israel, while Israel in turn has accused Syria and Iran of downing the plane.

On Tuesday, a cartoon in Israel's leading newspaper Yediot Acharonot showed Syria's President Bashar al-Assad standing next to a Russian officer as Russia's President Vladimir Putin drives a giant truck with the S-300 anti-aircraft missile shield towards the ruthless Syrian dictator. Earlier in the war, Russian Federation suspended a supply of S-300s, which Israel feared Syria could use against it.

Nevertheless, Netanyahu said that ultimately, Israel will continue to defend itself from Iranian escalation in the region, albeit preferably with Russian cooperation.

"The misleading (information) by the Israeli officer regarding the location of the strikes made it impossible to guide the Il-20 to a safe location", said Konashenkov.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Russian news agencies that supplying S-300 to Syria is Russia's "own right" and expressed confidence that this would not hurt ties with Israel.

The Russians are now quiet about the fact that their military in Syria misread the unfolding battle and initially reported that a French frigate was involved in the attack against the Iranian missile facility in Latakia.

However, Israel said that coordination between the IDF and the Russian military will continue, and Netanyahu announced that representatives from the Russian and Israeli militaries will meet soon.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to seek to move past the incident in spite of strong statements from the Russian military. Without this secret sign from the flying Il-20, Syria mistook it for an enemy, and shot it down.
