Here We Go: Kavanaugh Accuser's Legal Team Rejects 'Artificial' FBI Investigation Deadline

Christine Blasey Ford is sworn in before the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday Sept. 27 2018 on Capitol Hill in Washington. The Senate Judiciary Committee will hear from Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford the woman who

The review is meant to look into allegations by Christine Blasey Ford, who says Judge Kavanaugh groped her and attempted to disrobe her at a high school party in 1982.

The first inkling that Flake was going to throw a wrench in Republicans' plans to confirm Kavanaugh by early next week came in a Judiciary Committee meeting where members were scheduled to vote the judge out of committee.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday on an 11-10 party-line vote, with all Republicans supporting President Donald Trump's pick and all Democrats voting against him.

The uncharacteristically reasonable and moral decision was catalyzed by retiring Arizona Republican Senator Jeff Flake, who issued a statement yesterday morning that seemingly expressed his support for Kavanaugh's confirmation.

"I've ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaugh's file", Trump said in a statement.

The Senate Judiciary Committee asked the White House to ask the FBI to conduct the supplemental investigation, which will be "limited to current credible allegations" and must be done by October 5. "But I have never done this to her or to anyone". Murkowski and Collins may not need to make an immediate decision; instead they could support moving the nominee ahead for a final roll call as they make up their minds.

Friday afternoon, the panel voted on whether or not to advance Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate. What we don't know: Will he vote the same way for the president's nominee Brett Kavanaugh? One self-described liberal Democrat who advised him at Yale said that Judge Kavanaugh, quote, 'commands wide and deep respect among scholars, lawyers, and jurists.' And this praise has been echoed by hundreds of character witnesses who have testified before the Senate or written us letters to praise Judge Kavanaugh's personal character and his integrity in the strongest terms. Two other people who Ford says were present the night of the incident - Patrick J. Smyth and Leland Ingham Keyser - have said they do not remember being at a party with Ford and Kavanaugh. Barring no major revelations from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Senate could vote on confirming Kavanaugh next weekend, days after the start of the high court's session.

To his credit, Kavanaugh did not give the committee Democrats what they wanted, which was a sound bite calling for an FBI investigation into himself.

Another GOP official, who echoed almost identical sentiments about Flake, commented on a particular moment from Kavanaugh's testimony that they said will be a defining moment in USA history.

"On Monday, I stood in front of your office", Ana Maria Archila, co-executive director of the non-profit Centre for Popular Democracy Action, told Mr Flake. Number two, we will shortly move to proceed to the Kavanaugh nomination.

Senate Judiciary Committee member Sen. "I told it because I recognized in Dr. Ford's story that she is telling the truth", Archila added.

Feinstein said later: "This is not a trial of Dr. Ford, it's a job interview for Judge Kavanaugh". Partly, I'm sure, it's a matter of being as suspicious about them as everyone else is - rape parties, really? - but partly too they understand that any damage done to Kavanaugh by the Swetnick allegations will be credited entirely to Avenatti by Democratic voters.

"I will be totally reliant on what Senator [Chuck] Grassley and the group decides to do", Trump said.
