Trump orders Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of Brett Kavanaugh, Senate confirmation in doubt

Sen. Lindsey Graham said he believed

That vote was later delayed as Flake and Senator Christopher Coons, a Democrat, worked on a deal to allow one week for the FBI to investigate the claims against Kavanaugh, which he has vehemently denied.

Following more than eight hours of testimony from Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Thursday, a U.S. Senate judiciary committee voted advance Judge Kavanaugh's U.S. Supreme Court nomination despite sexual assault allegations against him.

Rachel Mitchell asks questions to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to be an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, on Capitol Hill on September 27, 2018.

But independent candidate and State Treasurer Terry Hayes said the decision on Kavanaugh was up to King and Collins to make.

The magazine's McKay Coppins asked Flake if he planned to continue supporting Kavanaugh's confirmation "unless the Federal Bureau of Investigation finds something in the next week that changes your mind?" McConnell soon called for the investigation as well, after resisting that step since the allegations became public.

Republicans see Kavanaugh as pivotal to their gaining control of the nine-member Supreme Court bench.

The Senate will vote on a motion to proceed, one of the steps leading to a full chamber vote on the nomination itself. A White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly said the West Wing saw the judge's opening statement as "game changing" and said Trump appeared to react positively.

"I thought her testimony was very compelling, and she looks like a very fine woman to me".

"It is not my responsibility to determine whether Mr. Kavanaugh deserves to sit on the Supreme Court", she said, but it is "my responsibility is to tell you the truth". He was viewed as a possible "no" vote on the panel and in the closely-divided Senate - until his morning announcement Friday. Vice President Mike Pence would cast the deciding vote if the Senate is evenly split. Angus King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, has already said he will vote against confirming Kavanaugh.

The President, in announcing the new probe yesterday, said he ordered the FBI to conduct a "supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaugh's file".

To Hannah King, a college senior from Bristol, Tennessee, Christine Blasey Ford's allegations of a drunken attack by Kavanaugh at a 1982 party when both were in high school were jarring and scary.

Ford, a Palo Alto University clinical psychologist and registered Democrat with a record of left-wing activism, accused the judge earlier this month of trying to rape her as a drunken teenager at a house party in the early 1980s. Jeff Flake of Arizona released a statement announcing that he would vote in favor of Kavanaugh.

Democratic challenger Tom Malinowski says the issue goes beyond whether Kavanaugh should be on the court.

In her prepared testimony, Ford named three other people-beside her and Kavanaugh-who she said were present at the party, including Mark Judge, Patrick James "PJ" Smyth, and Keyser. Republicans say it was justifiable outrage, because Kavanaugh's reputation has been forever marred and he maintains he has been wrongly accused. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who's officially undecided, indicated today she's on board with the week-long delay.

Senator Heidi Heitkamp, a Democrat from North Dakota, also said she needs time to decide how she will vote. "Shawn Moody is not running to be part of Washington, D.C. ME has two duly elected United States senators, and it is their decision to make".
