Brett Kavanaugh: Hundreds arrested in Supreme Court protest

Sen. Chuck Grassley speaks with reporters on the from the Senate floor on Capitol Hill in Washington

His appointment would tilt the court in favour of conservatives.

"And a man's life is in tatters". No Republicans have said they will vote against Kavanaugh.

Flake's request followed wrenching testimony from Christine Blasey Ford, the first woman to go public with an allegation against Kavanaugh, who testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee that he sexually assaulted her at a social gathering during their high school years in the early 1980s.

She testified that a drunken Mr Kavanaugh pinned her down, tried to remove her clothing and covered her mouth when she screamed.

Kavanaugh has denied the accusations by Ford, by Deborah Ramirez, who says he exposed himself to her during a college party, and by Julie Swetnick, who has alleged she was victimized at a party attended by Kavanaugh and his friends. The limited FBI investigation was begun late last week when Jeff Flake, a Republican hold-out on the judiciary committee, signalled he would not confirm Kavanaugh without further checks. Both sides were mindful that their written communications might one day be subject to subpoena, particularly if Democrats take control of the House of Representatives in next month's midterm elections, the people said. But Ramirez said that she was troubled by what she perceived as a lack of willingness on the part of the Bureau to take steps to substantiate her claims. "No new information", he said. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Trump's insults of Ford marked a "new low".

In a statement after reading the report Chairman Grassley said: "There's nothing in it that we didn't already know".

The FBI have conducted a background investigation into sexual misconduct claims against the Supreme Court nominee.

However senior Democrats attacked the process, calling the investigation "incomplete" and accusing the White House of limiting its scope.

Ford has said the incident happened in an upstairs room and that she is "100 percent" certain it was Kavanaugh who assaulted her, although she has acknowledged that her memories of other details of the evening remain unclear. "It is time to vote".

US Senator Susan Collins, left, Republican of ME, walks to a room to read the report on the FBI investigation into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on October 4, 2018.

President Trump declared this week that he wanted the most "comprehensive" inquiry, although he favoured it being completed with no delays.

Thousands of anti-Kavanaugh protesters rallied outside the Supreme Court and entered a Senate office building, holding signs such as "Believe Survivors" and "Kava-Nope".

During his testimony, Kavanaugh alternated between angrily yelling at Democrats on the committee and tearing up.

Maine Senator Susan Collins called the document "thorough", while Arizona's Jeff Flake said, "We've seen no additional corroborating information".

Almost 8 in 10 Republicans said they approve of how Trump has handled the allegations in the new poll, which was conducted before Trump mocked Ford at Tuesday night's rally.

Two Democrats, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, are also yet to declare their intentions.

"I have not heard from them yet, but I am hopeful that they will still contact me", Abramson said in an email to The Washington Post.

When it comes to the Kavanaugh vote, however, she is officially undecided, but she made a comment today about the FBI investigation that some interpreted to mean that she may support Kavanaugh's nomination.
