Japan issues evacuation advisories for one million as typhoon hits west coast

Kansai International Airport partially is flooded by typhoon Jebi in Osaka western Japan Tuesday Sept. 4 2018. A powerful typhoon blew through western Japan on Tuesday causing heavy rain to flood the region's main offshore international airport

Multiple unconfirmed media reports say at least six people have been killed and over 150 injured as strong winds and heavy downpours battered Western Japan today.

Jebi has a similar trajectory to Typhoon Cimaron which made landfall on 23 August, disrupting transport but causing limited damage and few injuries.

A man in his 70s died apparently after being blown to the ground from his apartment in Osaka prefecture, while a 71-year-old man died after being buried underneath a storage house that collapsed on him, officials said.

Footage from the storm making landfall showed giant waves crashing against the coastline, and flying debris.

The strong gusts ripped sheeting from rooftops, toppled trucks on bridges and swept a tanker anchored in Osaka bay into a nearby bridge running to the Kansai International Airport.

Nearly 3,000 people stranded at one of the biggest Airport of Japan, following the strongest typhoon Jebi have created havoc and claimed, nine lives as of now and injuring several.

Evacuation advisories have been issued for more than 300,000 people in western Japan - including 280,000 in the port city of Kobe - with local officials setting up some 1,500 shelters, the central and local governments said in statements.

The storm made landfall on Shikoku, the smallest main island, at around noon.

The storm was heading north across Japan's main island of Honshu towards the Sea of Japan.

More than 600 flights have been cancelled by domestic airlines, and among Japan's top two carriers, All Nippon Airways Co. and Japan Airlines Co. have cancelled 289 and 180 flights. Jebi was moving fast on a northeast track and expected to weaken as it crosses Japan.

Japan's meteorological agency said that the storm had downgraded to a low pressure system as it crossed the Sea of Japan early Wednesday, but cautioned that it was still moving, with winds reaching 100mph, NHK reports.

Traffic boards and communication relay poles in Osaka were brought down yesterday by the strong winds caused by Typhoon Jebi. At a disaster preparedness meeting on Monday, Abe enjoined Japanese citizens to "take action to protect your lives". High-speed bullet train services were suspended from Tokyo west to Hiroshima, although services resumed partially when the typhoon left the region.
