Revolutionary cancer-fighting treatment earns scientists Nobel Prize in medicine

US Japanese Immunologists Win Nobel For Revolutionary Cancer Treatment

The two scientists will share the 9 million Swedish kronor ($1.01 million) that comes with the prize.

Allison's work led to development of the first immune checkpoint inhibitor drug which would become the first to extend the survival of patients with late-stage melanoma. Their research has led to the development of drugs that release that Human immune system against the cancer cells. When the treatments work, the cancer goes into remission.

Science advances on the efforts of many, he said.

The research honored with today's Nobel Prize in Medicine paid off for at least one very famous patient: former US president Jimmy Carter.

One of Carter's treatments was a drug that blocked the immune-cell "brake" studied by Honjo. By releasing that brake, Honjo's research had found a "strikingly effective" treatment against cancer.

The two scientists were cited for "their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation". This practice contrasts with radiation therapy and standard chemotherapy, which directly attack cancerous tumors.

Allison plans to continue his research, focusing on the intricacies of the immune system's response to cancer and identifying new targets for potential treatment.

The findings by the two researchers gave boost to research against fighting cancer. He is a professor at University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Centre. Normally, key immune system soldiers called T cells seek out and attack invaders.

A member of his golf club approached him and thanked him for his efforts, he said. "I had lung cancer and I thought I was playing my last round of golf, but now I am able to play golf again". I have never been happier than that.

I was told by the Nobel Committee when I was called this morning that this was the first prize they've ever given for cancer therapy.

Allison's research was conducted at the University of California, Berkeley.

"In some patients, this therapy is remarkably effective", Jeremy Berg, editor-in-chief of the Science family of journals, told the AP.

"The professor's achievement has given rays of hope to many cancer patients", said Abe.

"However, advanced cancer remains immensely hard to treat, and novel therapeutic strategies are desperately needed", the Nobel Assembly said.

In other Nobel Prize announcements, the physics prize will be announced Tuesday, followed by chemistry on Wednesday and the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. The Nobel prize can only be awarded to individuals, but it is important to remember that others would have been involved in the discoveries.

In 2014, Dr. Allison was awarded a Canada Gairdner International Award for his pioneering work on checkpoint inhibitors, making him the 88th victor of the prestigious Canadian prize to go on to claim a Nobel. The literature prize will not be given this year because of a sexual misconduct scandal at the body that decides the award.
