'Austerity is over': spending on public services to rise, says May

Jeremy Wright speaks at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham

May's rival and Brexit critic, former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, shared his vision of a post-Brexit Britain on Tuesday, during a speech in which he said the government should be cutting taxes to stimulate investment. European Union leaders will lay the ground on March 23 for the next phase of Brexit talks after British Prime Minister Theresa May urged them to seize a "new dynamic" in the negotiations.

As Theresa May jigged out onto the stage at the Conservative Party conference to give her keynote speech, I had to ask myself, last year it was coughing, what's the affliction this year - until I realised she was dancing - to Abba's Dancing Queen coming over the sound system.

She reasserted her commitment to finding a realistic compromise with the European Union - unlike some of her conservative rivals, who she said "are not acting in the national interest, but their own political interest".

The Conservative Party has spent the conference showcasing its divisions and May was obligated to try to paper them over. The same message was applied to several themes, which she touched upon - standing up against "Corbyn's party", defending Great Britain's national interests at home and overseas, and the country's economic recovery and prosperous future.

"And there's another reason why we need to come together".

But she did her best to appear relaxed as she sashayed on to the stage to Abba hit Dancing Queen and joked about the coughing fit and collapsing stage backdrop which marred her calamitous conference speech in Manchester past year. "And in so doing to believe in conservatism and to believe in Britain". If this is her rendition of unity, we'd all do best never to see what May's discord looks like.

United Kingdom correspondent Rod Liddle told Mike Hosking Theresa May has most of her Cabinet and Conservative Party behind her.

"We are entering the most hard phase of the negotiations", underlined the leader of the uk.

"We will help you get on the housing ladder".

A more risky alternative was her claim that British resilience could withstand a "no-deal" Brexit, even though initially the country will face economic difficulties, as a result of protectionist measures and checks at the border. Last month, Johnson and his wife Marina Wheeler announced they were divorcing after 25 years of marriage - a move some saw as an attempt to neutralize potential stories about his private life before a leadership campaign.

The Local Government Association which represents hundreds of town halls and city halls, described her decision to lift the borrowing cap for building houses as fantastic.

May appeared intent on stealing Johnson's spotlight, scheduling a flurry of morning interviews at which she unveiled a new immigration policy a day ahead of schedule. "But if we stick together and hold our nerve I know we can get a deal that delivers for Britain".

There was also the promise that, should Brexit go well, as in, May's way, public sector workers who've had their pay frozen would see that thaw, because 'after a decade of austerity people need to know their hard work has paid off'.

What was most notable today was May finally admitting that the personal is the political.

For many Conservatives, whose party is dwindling in numbers and divided over Brexit, he was a tonic.

"But according to the Daily Telegraph, Mrs May is under pressure to set a timetable for his departure", some members of his cabinet in the hope that she resigns as soon as the Brexit consumed.
