President Donald Trump's controversial Supreme Court pick was approved by senators on Saturday in highly unusual scenes where protesters heckled from the Senate's public gallery as politicians cast votes.

The months-long battle over the nomination of Mr Kavanaugh, who has weathered accusations of sexual assault, has roiled Americans' passions - and placed President Donald Trump at the threshold of one of the biggest victories of his presidency.

The nomination process has ripped open the scabs on the never-healed wounds of polarisation on the U.S. body politic exactly a month before the mid-term elections to Congress that can determine the future of Trump's presidency.

The only party dissenters were Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, who had meant to vote no, and Democrat Joe Manchin, who voted yes.

But the Mr Kavanaugh spectacle, fueled by extraordinary accusations and counter-claims in nationally televised hearings, and tense battles over an 11th-hour FBI investigation to address the assault allegations, has inflamed political passions.

But his confirmation was blocked by Senate Republicans, who controlled the upper chamber and refused to hold hearings or a vote on him.

While Judge Kavanaugh was sworn in, in a private ceremony, protests continued outside, with some even rushing to the doors and banging on them in fury.

On ABC's "This Week", Hirono was pressed on whether she might support potential future Democratic efforts to impeach Kavanaugh.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel said he was "proud" of his colleagues.

"We simply followed the tradition in America, which is that if you have. a Senate of a different party than the president you don't fill a vacancy created in a presidential year".

Trump told reporters aboard the flight he is certain one of Kavanaugh's accusers, California professor Christine Blasey Ford, named the wrong person when she identified Kavanaugh as the man who assaulted her when the two were in high school. Still, Collins said, the allegations "fail to meet the "more likely than not" standard", and "I do not believe that these charges can fairly prevent Judge Kavanaugh from serving on the court".

Both parties contend that the new contours of the race will energise their supporters in the election's final stretch.

While the process was "unattractive", Trump also said Saturday that the extra week of investigation "was really a good thing" and said he believed the FBI report, which has not been made public, exonerated Kavanaugh.

Trump, throughout the day, insisted Kavanagh would not be tainted by the sexual assault allegations from Christine Blasey Ford and others that almost tanked his nomination, declaring he was "100 percent" certain his nominee was innocent. Anti-Kavanaugh activists have confronted Collins and other GOP or swing-vote senators on Capitol Hill, in encounters caught on video.

While fellow actress Alyssa Milano, who helped spark the Me Too movement by encouraging victims to tweet about their harassment or abuse, said she was "terrified and outraged". "The only way we can get people to do what we think they should do is because people respect us", Justice Elena Kagan said. They said he also seemed too ready to rule for Trump in a possible federal court case against the president.

The political groups Be A Hero Team, Maine People's Alliance and Mainers for Accountable Leadership had called out the senator before her vote, with a Crowdpac campaign titled: "Either Sen".

Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court has been decided.

"Democrats have been trying to destroy Judge Brett Kavanaugh since the very first second he was announced", Trump declared as he rallied voters in Minnesota on Thursday night.
