Here's how Hurricane Michael could impact Maryland

Destin Harbor

Hurricane Michael passed through western Cuba on Monday evening and is projected to hit Florida's Panhandle on Wednesday afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center, citing Michael's risky trifecta of storm surge, flash flooding and winds, described the seventh hurricane of the Atlantic season as "life-threatening", and the Florida Division of Emergency Management warned on Twitter of the storm's "rapid intensification" ahead of landfall.

A storm surge warning is in effect for Okaloosa/Walton County Line in Florida to Anclote River in Florida.

A hurricane watch is in effect for coastal Alabama and a tropical storm watch is in effect for coastal Mississippi.

As of the 4pm CDT advisory Monday evening, Michael was a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour.

It is expected to be a violent Category 3 hurricane - with the power to uproot trees, block roads and knock out power for days - by the time it hits Florida on Wednesday, before moving across the southeastern United States through Thursday.

It's likely that Hurricane Michael will cause beach erosion for 75 percent of Florida's Gulf Coast Beaches, the USGS predicted.

The hurricane, now off Cuba's western tip, is expected to make landfall on the Florida panhandle and affect portions of southern Alabama.

The threat for tornadoes will increase late tonight into Wednesday over parts of the Florida Panhandle, the northern Florida Peninsula, and southern Georgia. "Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions", the hurricane center said. "It looks like another big one". "That includes experts from Homeland Security, the EPA, the Department of Defense, Health and Human Services and the Army Corps of Engineers".

The governor activated 750 national guardsman for storm response on Monday, on top of the 500 activated the day before.

Republican Senator Susan Collins and Joe Manchin , a Democrat, both indicated their backing for the judge on Friday, BBC reported. In a second tweet, she cautioned that she was "not making any announcements" but was "deeply disappointed" in Collins' vote.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned that the "monstrous hurricane" was just hours away, and his Democratic opponent for the Senate, Sen.

Florida Fish and Wildlife has put 40 additional law enforcement officers on notice to deploy with a variety of special equipment, including boats.

Some areas along the state's Big Bend area could see risky storm surge between six and 12 feet as Michael nears, the Hurricane Center reported.

Coastal storm surges of up to 12 feet (3.7 meters) are expected along the panhandle.

"You haven't got anywhere to go (if the bridges close)", he said Tuesday morning.

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials provided an update on Hurricane Michael on Tuesday.

According to the Associated Press, six people were killed in Honduras, four people in Nicaragua and three in El Salvador.

Local authorities are stressing timely evacuation, too. He doesn't expect evacuations will be needed and the rain forecast is for 2 inches or less.

Hurricane Michael could bring heavy rain and high winds to parts of Maryland later this week, but extreme flooding did not pose an enormous risk to most of the state as of Monday, according to the National Weather Service. The county has already closed its schools through Thursday.

"I just got a crew that came in that are staying also and they're in here helping me get everything buttoned up, tightened down, getting the food secure", Givens said.
