PlayStation Online ID name change feature coming soon

PlayStation announce when you'll be able to change your PSN ID

Sony has announced that the long-rumoured ability to change your PlayStation Network name is officially in the works for PlayStation 4 users.

As of now, the feature will only be available to PlayStation users that have registered as testers for previous PS4 system software betas. To fix any problems that arise, Sony will allow users to change back and forth between their original and new ID at any time.

You might want to get it right the first time, though, as the post explains that while your first change is free, "changes after that will cost $9.99 USD / CAD", or $4.99 USD/CAD for PlayStation Plus members. Some games released before 1st April 2018 may not play nicely with new names, and in particular this might affect PS3 and PS Vita titles. On the other hand, you can only choose to display your old ID or not at the time of the name change - the option won't be available later, suggesting that the old record is somewhat scrubbed after the change.

There hasn't been a way to change your PSN ID since the PlayStation Network was launched in 2006. That small cost is meant to discourage scammers and griefers from constantly changing their account name for the purposes of harassment.

You can also display your old ID alongside your new one in order to make sure that your friends know who you still are. Reverting back to an old ID will resolve most issues caused by the ID change.

Microsoft would in fact charge Xbox Live users a fee to change their name, which many players obliged to, but Sony were still reluctant.

When you change your name, you will have the option to display your old name alongside your new one to help friends recognize you - but once you change your name and select to enable this (or not), it can not be changed. "The full roll-out of the feature to all PS4 owners is planned for early 2019, so stay tuned for updates down the road!"
