Turkey Claims Saudis Killed, Chopped Up Journalist — NY Times

Saudi writer 'murdered' in consulate

Turkish officials have not stated how they determined that Khashoggi was killed at the consulate.

Daily Sabah, a Turkish newspaper with close ties to government, namedand published photos on Tuesday of the alleged 15-member Saudi assassination team accused of travelling to Istanbul on the day Khashoggi disappeared.

Turkish authorities are set to search the site after announcing that Saudi Arabia had declared itself "open to co-operation" in the investigation, but no date has been announced for the search.

American Senator Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on Tuesday "everything today points to" Khashoggi's murder last week inside the Saudi consulate.

Turkish officials reportedly believe that those 12 Saudi officials killed Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and then transported his dead body back to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has dismissed as baseless accusations that it killed or abducted Khashoggi, and on Tuesday Turkey's state-owned Anadolu agency said Riyadh had invited Turkish experts and other officials to visit the consulate.

"Although my hope slowly fades away each passing day", Cengiz writes, "I remain confident that Jamal is still alive".

"Our security officials are investigating the issue in every detail", Yasin, Aktay, an adviser to Erdogan, told CNN Turk on Sunday.

"We're being very tough and we have investigators over there and we're working with Turkey, and frankly we're working with Saudi Arabia".

On his first global trip as president, Trump visited Saudi Arabia and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales. Jamal's well being, as a Saudi citizen, is our utmost concern and we are focusing on the investigation as a means to reveal the truth behind his disappearance.

Top leaders of the ruling Saudi family deployed a 15-man hit squad to lay in wait for dissident writer Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, The New York Times said in an explosive story.

Mr Khashoggi was visiting the consulate to finalise his divorce so he could marry his fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

Reports of Jamal Khashoggi being detained and killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul are "absolutely false and baseless", said Khalid bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the U.S. said in a statement.

Khashoggi said in the beginning of the recording that now he lives between Istanbul and Washington.

Khashoggi's disappearance is likely to further deepen divisions between Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

"When President Trump became president, we've changed our armament strategy again for the next 10 years to put more than 60% with the United States of America", he added. Earlier this year, the Saudi Crown Prince slammed Turkey, stating that the country is part of a "triangle of evil" along with Iran and radical Islamic terrorist groups. Fearing for his life, Khashoggi has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States for the past year.

"At this time, I implore President Trump and first lady Melania Trump to help shed light on Jamal's disappearance", Cengiz wrote.

As a contributor to the Post, Khashoggi has written extensively about Saudi Arabia, including criticizing its war in Yemen, its recent diplomatic spat with Canada and its arrest of women's rights activists after the lifting of a ban on women driving.

He said Turkish authorities were looking into all camera records and monitoring incoming and outgoing airport transits, but added that Turkey would await the results of the prosecutor's investigation. Khashoggi is a critic of the Saudi regime.
