Saudi threatens to retaliate against any sanctions over Khashoggi disappearance

Companies cut ties with Saudi Arabia over Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance

On Saturday, the US President pledged to impose "severe punishment" on Saudi Arabia if it turns out that Riyadh is behind the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi who has been missing since October 2.

"The kingdom's economy has an influential and vital role in the global economy, and that kingdom's economy is only affected by the global economy".

Khashoggi, a USA resident and Washington Post columnist critical of Saudi Arabia, disappeared on October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

A Turkish security source has told the BBC that officials had audio and video evidence proving Mr Khashoggi, who writes for the Washington Post, was murdered inside the consulate.

Saudi Arabia insists Khashoggi left the building safely and dismissed accusations that authorities had ordered his murder by a hit squad as "lies and baseless allegations".

This statement came after the Saudi stock market plunged by almost 7 percent at one point on Sunday.

"We're going to find out what happened", Trump pledged Friday when questioned by reporters in Cincinnati where he was headlining a political rally.

"The recent disappearance of Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi suggests that he could be a victim of a gross violation of internationally recognized human rights", almost two dozen senators explained in their letter to the president. But Mr. Trump said sanctions on Saudi Arabia may not be the best course.

With a Washington Post columnist's suspected murdered at the hands of Saudi Arabia, you would expect tough talk from the White House, sanctions, and a series of other gestures aimed at tampering down the tactic of assassinating unkind critics.

Upon noticing the watch, Khashoggi's assailants tried to unlock the Apple Watch with multiple password attempts, ultimately using the journalist's fingerprint to unlock the smart watch.

He mysteriously vanished more than a week ago, and was last seen entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

A delegation from Saudi Arabia has arrived in Turkey as part of a joint investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance.

On Friday, a source with links to the prince's family said Prince Khaled, the governor of Mecca, had been sent to Turkey in his capacity as special adviser to King Salman. Since Trump's election in 2016, the two countries signed agreements worth hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and weapons deals.

Saudi Arabia firmly denies any involvement in his disappearance and says Khashoggi left the consulate that afternoon. Saudi Arabia has denied the allegations so far.

The minister added that his country was "in compliance with worldwide laws and conventions", the official Saudi Press Agency reported him as saying. "Boeing, Lockheed, Raytheon, I don't want to hurt jobs", Trump said. Those policies are all seen as initiatives of the crown prince.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he wanted to know the truth about what happened and said he feared similar "disappearances" would become a "new normal".
