Thousands march in Chicago to encourage voting in midterms

Brett Kavanaugh is the first member of the Supreme Court to hire an all-female class of law clerks

Slightly more registered voters say the Kavanaugh confirmation proceedings make them more likely to support Democrats for Congress than Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections, though a 39 percent plurality say it doesn't make a difference.

Senate Democrats up for reelection in red states feared they could be kept in Washington while their Republican challengers ran free in their respective states.

"That Democrat play against Kavanaugh was really to try to get the Republicans to pull his nomination, or let it fail based on lack of Republican votes, which would have suppressed [GOP voter] turn out", McLaughlin told "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y. Because the Republican Party has closely tied itself to the president's image and agenda since he took office, these numbers bode very poorly for them going into the midterm elections.

"I believe if we are fortunate enough to take back the House and or the Senate, that's when civility can start again", she said Tuesday.

While Scarborough noted that, as Donald Trump's election demonstrated, polling data four weeks out from the vote doesn't mean a candidate's a lock, he stressed that anyone honestly looking at the numbers after the shameless smear campaign against Kavanaugh must acknowledge that it's turned out to be a political "disaster" for Senate Democrats, who need to win all seven of the true toss-up seats in November to gain the 51-seat majority. Partisan divisions are 33-26-35 percent, Democrats-Republicans-independents. Men divide about evenly on both, while women disapprove of the confirmation by 58-35 percent and of the committee's work by 56-38 percent. The gender gap peaks among 18- to 49-year-olds -- 70 percent of women in this age group support an investigation, vs. 53 percent of men. "According to the survey, 55 percent of independents say there should be further investigation of Kavanaugh, while 40 percent are opposed".

White evangelical Protestant voters are among the most likely groups to support Republican candidates after the debate over confirmation, with 64 percent saying they are more likely to support Republicans.

A plurality of voters, 44 percent, said the confirmation process gave them a less favorable view of Kavanaugh - including 36 percent who said it made them view him much less favorably - while 30 percent said it made them more favorable toward him.

"There is no reason Democrats should be making any deals with Mitch McConnell to make it easier to confirm more radical conservatives to the courts".

The poll was conducted for the ABC News broadcaster and The Washington Post newspaper among a total of 1,144 respondents over the phone between October 8-11.
