Trump Suggests Defense Chief Could Leave

Trump suggests Mattis could be next to step down calls defense secretary “sort of a Democrat”

"It could be that he is", Trump told CBS News' Lesley Stahl on "60 Minutes" last night when asked if Mattis is on the way out.

"Well, I don't know; he hasn't told me that", Trump said when asked whether Mattis might be leaving his position. "And I think, frankly, a bigger problem", Mr. Trump said and denied that by saying so he is not trying to divert the entire Russian Federation thing. "At some point, everybody leaves".

The president said Mr. Mattis, a retired Marine Corps general, hasn't indicated that he wants to leave his post yet.

In an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" that was broadcast on Sunday, .

He added that he didn't approve of everyone on his Cabinet, telling Stahl that while he thinks he has a "great Cabinet", "there are some people that I'm not happy with".

Stahl, interrupted, "I'm going to change the subject again". "And I have other people that I'm beyond thrilled with". "People leave. That's Washington".

"And then I watched you mimic her and thousands of people were laughing at her", Stahl explained.

"I'm changing things around, and I'm entitled to". When she asked him how he could "embrace" the brutal dictator, Trump asserted that his brand of diplomacy had helped defang a threat to the U.S. Trump met with Kim in Singapore in June, and the leaders have tentative plans for another session, according to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"I had lunch with him two days ago".

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis speaks during a meeting with Greek Minister of Defense Panagiotis Kammenos after an enhanced honor cordon at the Pentagon in Washington, U.S., October 9, 2018. In a statement after the book's publication, Mattis said that "the contemptuous words about the president attributed to me in Woodward's book were never uttered by me or in my presence". They wouldn't be able to help me at all.

Last week, United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, who has worked closely with Mattis, announced that she was leaving on what appeared to be friendly terms with Trump. "But I don't know that it's man-made".

While Trump did not act in an openly hostile way toward Stahl, as he has to other journalists, he rarely let Stahl get out a full question, before jumping in to begin his answer or contradict her, meaning the transcript makes for fairly choppy reading.

Questioned about his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin's efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election, Trump quickly turned back to China.
