Saudis preparing to admit Jamal Khashoggi died during interrogation, sources say

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi speaks during a press conference in Manama Bahrain. Turkish claims that Khashoggi who wrote for The Washington Post was slain inside a Saudi diplomatic mission in Turkey has put

The inspection came less than a day after Erdoğan spoke to King Salman on the phone.

Asked when the public prosecutor could make an announcement, the official said: "He was instructed to work quickly". It was unclear whether there would be much of anything to investigate forensically, given that so much time has passed since Khashoggi was last seen.

In a statement by the Saudi Press Agency, the government denied any involvement: "The Kingdom affirms its total rejection of any threats and attempts to undermine it, whether by waving economic sanctions, using political pressure, or repeating false accusations".

Turkey has wanted to search the consulate for days.

"Growing tensions over the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul has proved supportive for oil prices", said ING commodities strategist Warren Patterson.

"It has been 13 days since the event, so surely proving some of the evidence might be hard, but we believe we will obtain evidence", the Turkish official said.

Turkey rejected that offer. It is not clear whether that happened.

"Obviously, this is something that has highlighted real concerns for an terrible lot of people and let's just say I'm glad we're having these conversations in the open".

Saudi Arabia's ambitious Vision 2030 project - the brainchild of the kingdom's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - is heavily dependent on overseas investment. The regime's pattern of breaking the standards of legitimate worldwide behavior has included kidnapping the prime minister of Lebanon and, above all, an indiscriminate air war in Yemen that is more responsible than anything else for turning that country into a humanitarian disaster. He is embroiled in a damaging dispute with neighbouring Qatar.

The Glazers sold two per cent of the club's shares with limited voting rights in August a year ago, and may be interested in selling more to the Saudis.

The prince, ambitious, aggressive and just 33 in a kingdom long ruled by aging monarchs, has considerable weight in Saudi government actions.

What allegedly happened in Istanbul? A team arrived by unmarked police cars at the consulate but said nothing to journalists waiting outside as they entered the building.

Mr Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government who has written for the Washington Post, was last seen walking into the consulate on 2 October.

He adds: "We're going to try getting to the bottom of it very soon, but his was a flat denial".

It is believed Saudi Arabia will announce that the journalist was killed by mistake. He is a United States resident.

But the mostly low-key reaction from the Washington to the disappearance provides a stark contrast to how both Trump and his predecessors have dealt with unproven accusations made against other countries - most notably Russian Federation.

The European Union has joined calls for a transparent investigation.

Already, global business leaders are pulling out of the kingdom's upcoming investment forum, a high-profile event known as "Davos in the Desert", and the sell-off on Riyadh's Tadawul stock exchange showed that investors are uneasy.

Saudi flags, photos of the king and crown prince looking stern, and pro-Saudi hashtags were making the rounds on social media Monday with a common theme: Saudi Arabia and its ruling family are a "red line".

They are expected to move a motion in the Senate on Tuesday which also calls on Senate president Scott Ryan to seek an explanation over the case from Saudi Arabia's envoy in Canberra.
