(Update) Rockstar worked '100 hour weeks' to create Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 Details Its Deadly Weapons, Violent New 4K Screens Released

Since the interview was published, Houser has released a statement, explaining that the extreme working conditions related to "the senior writing team, which consists of four people, Mike Unsworth, Rupert Humphries, Lazlow and [Houser]", as opposed to the wider development team.

More importantly, we obviously don't expect anyone else to work this way. Red Dead Redemption 2 was built from the ground up for the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro generation of systems, and console optimization probably kept getting more and more complicated as the team added more content to the game itself.

And that's work in the sense of time, quality, and in the context of the full game.

He noted that, despite the huge level of content that Red Dead 2 has, the team does have a sequel in them "if this one does well enough and we think we have other interesting things to say". The gun-slinging epic has been met with glowing previews across the board, and developer Rockstar has been inundated with praise for creating a world overflowing with impossible detail. Insane working schedules, with Houser admitting that the dreaded "crunch" time of Red Dead Redemption 2's development lead some of the team working several 100-hour weeks.

The polishing, rewrites, and reedits Rockstar does are huge.

As Rockstar Intel highlighted, RD2's game length will cast a shadow over some of the best, and biggest, AAA titles released to date.

The Wild West shooter will now require players to commit around 60 hours time if they want to achieve 100% completion, and that's just for the campaign. They're figures that make for impressive reading, until you realize what was sacrificed so they could be reeled out.

That works out to 20 hours a day if the employees are working five days of the week, or 14 hours if they're working seven days of the week.

Rockstar Games always avoid the limelight, and while hardcore fans might know the names of brothers Dan and Sam Houser the two have never even had a publicity picture taken together.

Plenty of high-profile creators have also slammed crunch, with Double Fine founder Tim Schafer past year branding it "misguided and old-fashioned," and calling for studios to eliminate the practice altogether. This story arc was over 5 hours long but devs cut it out as they felt that it "didn't work". "It's a mode you get into when you can't see a successful, metered approach to the work you have to do", he commented, drawing on his own experiences.
