Jamie Lee Curtis smashes box office records, tweets the flawless reaction

New 'Halloween' Has A Record Breaking Opening Weekend

Universal's reboot of the venerable horror franchise is on track to sell an estimated $77.5 million in tickets at 3,928 theaters in the US and Canada from Friday through Sunday, winning the weekend and scoring the second-highest October opening ever, behind Venom's $80.3 million earlier this month. Jamie Lee Curtis again stars as Laurie Strode, sole survivor of that spree. Second biggest October movie opening ever.

But the film was also a huge win for Curtis, who reprised her role as Laurie Strode, who tries again to escape the clutches of masked killer Michael Myers. "Halloween" is now Curtis' biggest opening to date, as well as the best horror opening with a female lead.

The horror flick beat an opening weekend record for slasher movies set by the 2009 reboot of "Friday the 13th", which brought in $40.6 million.

The newly released Halloweenmovie has enjoyed a record-breaking opening weekend.

Universal executives could be excused for a bit of gloating - they produced "Halloween" for a microscopic $10 million.

She then wrapped things up with the hashtag #womengetthingsdone. Plus, the critics have liked it, the film now at 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie cost just $10 million to make, before marketing costs, and was projected to debut to as much as $70 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Meanwhile, Fox expanded YA drama "The Hate U Give" to 2,303 screens. The horror genre is one of the most enduring in Hollywood, even as the box office has become more challenging, with titles regularly breaching expectations. That brings the film's domestic total to $10.6 million.

"Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween" also cashed in on the spooky spirit, picking up $9.7 million to land in fourth place.

Venom which fell two spots landed below A Star is Born which held onto second place for the third week in a row. Rounding out the top five is Universal's "First Man", which notched $8.5 million this weekend for a total of $30 million. The weekend was up almost 72 percent from the same weekend last October and the year to date is up almost 11 percent.
