Khashoggi disliked Israel, but his brutal murder puts Jerusalem in tough spot

Erdogan added he still wanted answers on numerous issues including 'who gave orders' to the team and where the corpse

A high-profile economic forum in Saudi Arabia began on Tuesday in Riyadh, the kingdom's first major event on the world stage since the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul earlier this month.

After more than two weeks of near silence, Saudi Arabia on Saturday finally admitted that Khashoggi, 59, was killed in their Istanbul consulate.

The opposition left-leaning New Democrats, who will be competing for the same voters as Trudeau in 2019 elections, say Canada should not be arming the Saudis when they are attacking civilian targets in Yemen.

Jamal Khashoggi was last seen walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey on October 2 to obtain papers which would allow him to get married to his fiancee, Hatice Cengiz.

Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union foreign policy minister Elmar Brok called on tougher checks of not only the embassy but also members of the Saudi Arabia consulate in the wake of the horrific death of Mr Khashoggi. U.S. goods and services traded with Saudi Arabia totaled an estimated $45.6 billion in 2017, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

It was earlier reported that the searches would be extended to a forest in Istanbul and a house in Yalova.

Erdogan offered his "sincere apologies" to the senior scribe's family, fiancee and the people of Saudi Arabia before beginning his speech at the Turkish parliament. Erdogan has said that he would share the information of the investigation in a speech on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Adel al-Jubeir said in an interview with U.S. television channel Fox on the same day that Prince Mohammed had no knowledge of Khashoggi's death.

This isn't the first time Nielsen's handling of border security has been scrutinized by the Trump White House. However, a White House official did say that tempers had since cooled and neither men are going to leave.

It contradicts the explanation being made by Saudi officials that the body was rolled up in a carpet and handed to a local collaborator who was tasked with disposing of the evidence. The Saudi government says that Khashoggi died after a fistfight.

On Tuesday, King Salman and Prince Mohammed received Khashoggi's son, Salah, and his brother, Sahel, at the Yamama Palace in Riyadh, where the two royals expressed their condolences. Instead, much of what he said confirmed reports and leaks citing anonymous officials in the days since the journalist walked into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

"We are going through a crisis of sorts resulting from the very regrettable and abhorrent incident that took place in Turkey", Khalid Al-Falih, Saudi Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources told an audience.

President Donald Trump on Monday told reporters he wasn't satisfied with the Saudis' response to Khashoggi's death, adding, "I'm not satisfied with what I've heard".

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh on Monday to discuss American-Saudi strategic partnerships, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Journalist Jamal Khashoggi was a critic of the Saudi leadership.

He did not mention an alleged audio recording that Turkish authorities claim to have of Mr Khashoggi's death that supposedly confirms he was tortured, killed, had his fingers cut off and was dismembered. In a remark clearly pointed by omitting any mention of MBS, he said, "I do not doubt the sincerity of King Salman".
