Suspicious Packages Target CNN, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama

Investigators are homing in on a postal facility in Opa-locka, Florida, where they believe some of the packages originated, another official said.

LUCAS: Right. That was - a pipe bomb was found in the mailbox of Soros' home in a suburb of NY.

Authorities in Sacramento, California, were also investigating a suspicious package sent to US Senator Kamala Harris, another Democrat. The fact that none detonated provides investigators with considerable evidence, he said. Some were discovered in mail processing facilities.

The devices all were sent to an Federal Bureau of Investigation lab in Virginia to be studied. Even with the sender still unknown, politicians from both parties used the threats to decry a toxic political climate and lay blame.

The president said that what he calls "fake news" has got worse and the mainstream media must "clean up its act, FAST". Democrats insisted the president should take a long look in the mirror. "Your inflammatory rhetoric, insults, lies, & encouragement of physical violence are disgraceful".

Trump's tweet was an effort to refocus attention on the midterms that could alter the path of his presidency. The package addressed to Mr. Obama was intercepted by Secret Service personnel in Washington, D.C. early on Wednesday. Each bore a computer-printed address label and six "Forever" postage stamps. She is the former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee who was accused by Clinton rivals of secretly helping the party's eventual presidential nominee.

A law enforcement official told the AP that the package discovered at Mr Soros' home appeared to be a pipe bomb and was in a package placed in a post box outside the gates of the compound. It was compact, perhaps about the length of a wooden spoon, and contained wires and a black pipe, officials said.

The new packages discovered Thursday set off a new wave of alarm.

Former Vice President Joe Biden and actor Robert De Niro also received packages, confirmed late Wednesday night and Thursday morning. And what they are saying is that the Secret Service intercepted two suspicious packages.

The first device was found Monday after being delivered to the home of billionaire financier and Democratic contributor George Soros.

Similar packages addressed to Clinton and Obama were intercepted on their way to Clinton's NY home where she lives with former President Bill Clinton and to Washington, where Obama lives with his wife, Michelle. They were discovered by technicians who screen mail sent to the former United States officials.

One of the packages was recovered at a South Florida office of Rep.

One of the packages sent had listed Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz as the sender.

"This clearly is an act of terror attempting to undermine our free press and leaders of this country through acts of violence", New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said at an afternoon news conference about the package sent to CNN's office at the Time Warner Center in New York City.

Trump first applauded law enforcement for capturing the suspect who mailed bombs to high-profile Democrats and he said, "Political violence must never ever be allowed in America and I will do everything in my power to stop it".

Trump claimed Wednesday at a rally in Wisconsin that Baldwin is a "radical, far left opponent" who "who wants a socialist takeover of health care".

"Bombers typically like this get caught because they're not sophisticated" and don't cover their tracks, Garrett said.

"Do you see how nice I'm behaving tonight?"

But at the same event, he blamed the media and on Twitter kept up the argument that the media plays a role.

"He should not be beating the tom-toms of anger and animosity and war", said the former Central Intelligence Agency chief, whose security clearance was revoked by Trump after he criticized the president's summit earlier this year with Russian President Vladimir Putin. But while many of Trump's predecessors reached out from time to time to their predecessors, Trump has largely not done so. He has continued to criticize her in subsequent rallies, lumping her together with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a longtime target of Republican ire. Last weekend, he said at a rally in Montana that a congressman who body-slammed a Guardian reporter was "my kind of guy".

In his speech, Trump compared the media's coverage of the attempted bombing to his administration's response after the shooting of Republican Rep. Steve Scalise during a congressional baseball practice in 2017.

"New Yorkers are safe", he said in part.
