Cricket Australia chairman urged to quit after ball tampering review

Taylor defended the decision to appoint David Peever prior to the review being completed

Cricket Godfather Allan Border described the bans as "excessive" and declared he would even be happy to see Smith, Warner and Cameron Bancroft given the green light to play global cricket this summer following a cultural review that deemed CA administrators must share responsibility for the scandal which has rocked the game to its core.

ACA President Greg Dyer and Chief Executive Alastair Nicholson made the call yesterday after Cricket Australia released a report into the ball-tampering scandal earlier this year in South Africa.

The ACA has formally called upon Cricket Australia's board to lift suspensions on the three players effective immediately in light of The Ethics Centre's "new and damning findings".

Bancroft has almost served his nine-month ban and will be free to return to all forms of the game in December.

'Given this, there must be a reconsideration of the harshness of the penalties handed down to Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft.

The review was non-binding but he said he was considering the report's 42 recommendations, including an anti-harassment code to stop sledging and training to improve team leaders' "moral courage".

However, under CA's ban, the three men also can not play first-class cricket for their states in the meantime.

"We have seen the Australian Cricketers' Association (statement) and note they will be making a submission to the CA Board in the next 48 hours", a CA spokesman said today.

There have been captains in the past who have been done for tampering with the ball and the penalties have been very lenient so there was no penalty for doing something wrong and it was always going to get to the case where it got out of control, ESPNcricinfo.com quoted Waugh, as saying.

"The bans have been handed down and the boys have copped them, as you'd expect".

The relationships between CA and the ACA became strained during last year's volatile pay dispute.

Longstaff's findings are couched in unusually powerful terms, likening the grief felt by the Australian public to another incident of poor sportsmanship in the country's cricketing past.

On Monday, the CA chairman, David Peever, said he accepted full responsibility for the ball-tampering scandal but he remained adamant he would not step down from his position.

To coincide with the report's release, CA released a "players pact" calling on cricketers to respect the game's tradition and "make Australians proud".

"They gave us a lot of feedback around that and that came through the overall Longstaff report", Nicholson said.

"Australian cricket has lost its balance and has stumbled badly", the review said in its executive summary.

Another option for CA is to allow Smith and Warner to at least be able to compete in the Big Bash League from December - a move which has growing support in cricketing circles, and would please new broadcasters Channel Seven and Fox Sports, entering the first season of a six-year deal worth $1.2 billion. "And so the sanctions stand, as I said several weeks ago". We assure you. The players "get it".
