From China to crime, Bolsonaro plots radical new course for Brazil

Brazil second round will be on Sunday Oct. 28

One of the most important endorsements, particularly for young people, came from YouTube personality Felipe Neto, whose channel has almost 27 million followers. "Congratulations on the victory in Brazil", said Argentina's conservative president Mauricio Macri.

However, he has made enemies with his denigrating comments on women, gays and blacks, while fondly recalling Brazil's brutal 1964-85 military dictatorship, in which he served as an army captain. In particular, many Brazilians are furious with the Workers' Party for its role in the graft scheme, known as "Carwash" and Haddad has struggled to build momentum with his promises of a return to the boom times by investing in health and education and reducing poverty.

"I think we are at the brink of a process that could push our democracy beyond its limits", Janot told Reuters late Saturday. "Together we will change the destiny of Brazil". "We're already seeing it now".

Center-right President Michel Temer, who is set to leave office as the most unpopular leader in Brazil's modern democracy, congratulated Bolsonaro and said the transition process would start Monday.

An advocate of gun rights, Bolsonaro has proposed to loosen gun ownership laws, and threatened to unleash a war on drugs in Brazil.

Brazil now documents over 60,000 gun deaths every year.

The center-right leader took over from Lula's successor, Dilma Rousseff, after she was impeached in 2016 for financial wrongdoing in office, ending the Workers' Party's 13 years in power. Latin America's largest economy has been stuck in recession since 2014.

The left-wing Workers' Party, which had won the previous four presidential elections, was seen as the best positioned to do that despite its problems - the decimation of its ranks and tarnishing of its image by the huge "Operation Car Wash" corruption investigation involving billions of dollars in bribes to politicians via inflated construction contracts. He also wants to let more Brazilians buy weapons to fight crime.

Mr Bolsonaro has also said that he will "cleanse" Brazil of corrupt politicians, a campaign promise which was very popular with Brazilians who say they are exhausted of the corruption which has seen dozens of high-ranking politicians from the established parties jailed. However, the populist could add 10 points of advantage over Haddad without much effort, campaigning from home after the stab he suffered during a street rally in early September.

"I'm not insane about Bolsonaro".

He often took to Twitter to lambaste the rival Workers' Party as unethical and unsafe. "We have had enough corruption and now we need to clean up".

Many observers predicted that a newcomer would emerge to harness the anti-establishment anger.

Among worldwide leaders congratulating Bolsonaro was U.S. President Donald Trump, who tweeted Monday that he had "a very good conversation" with Brazil's president-elect.

Bolsonaro's rise from a fringe congressman to the presidency has come against a backdrop of economic downturn, political turmoil, mammoth corruption scandals and rising violence.

Despite using some protectionist rhetoric, Bolsonaro has broadly committed to a policy of free market economics by promising to slash regulation, reduce taxes, privatize some state-run companies, and dramatically cut back the size of the government. Each camp argued that victory for the other could destroy Brazil.

"You are all my witnesses that this government will defend the constitution, of liberty and of God", Bolsonaro said in a Facebook live video in his first comments after his victory.
