Synagogue shooting suspect pleads not guilty as victims funerals continue

The City Of Pittsburgh And Shooting Victims Told Trump To Stay Away. He Didn’t Listen.

Federal prosecutors on Thursday charged Bowers with 44 counts, including using a firearm to commit murder and other hate crimes, such as obstructing the exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death and obstructing the exercise of religious beliefs resulting in bodily injury to a public safety officer.

Despite pleas from local leaders and citizens to not visit Squirrel Hill, or at least postpone his trip in the wake of the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre, President Donald Trump nevertheless arrived in the Pittsburgh neighborhood on October 30.

Robert Bowers pleaded "not guilty" Thursday morning to charges stemming from the fatal shooting of 11 Jewish congregants at Tree of Life synagogue on Saturday.

The White House says the goal of Trump's visit on Tuesday is to "express the support of the American people and to grieve with the Pittsburgh community".

Six people were injured - four of whom were police officers responding to the scene.

Bowers, 46, faces either death or a consecutive sentence of 535 years in federal prison.

Bowers remained in custody ahead of a preliminary hearing scheduled for tomorrow.

Thousands of mourners jammed a synagogue, a Jewish community center and a third, undisclosed site for the first in a weeklong series of funerals for victims of the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in USA history.

Bowers also faces prosecution at the state level.

Scores of protesters took to the streets of Pittsburgh on Tuesday to denounce a visit by US President Donald Trump in the wake of a mass shooting at a synagogue that left 11 people dead.

More funerals for the shooting victims are planned in Pittsburgh in the coming days. Weis said she dreamed her father, 86, could now drive a sports vehicle as fast as he wanted without "Mom telling him to slow down".

It is an uneasy visit for the president.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders said the wife of Richard Gottfried, who was killed, wanted Trump to know there were people wanted him there.

The man accused of killing 11 Jewish worshippers at a Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue has denied murdering them.

Widowed a decade ago, Younger had a son and daughter in California, who waited all day on Saturday to learn if he had survived.

Augie Siriano, a custodian at Tree of Life, said the couple often brought him chocolate chip cookies, and that Sylvan Simon liked to talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers professional football team.

In the hours after the deadly attack, the president condemned the suspect's violence, and said that the suspect should "pay the ultimate price" for his "assault on humanity".

About 2,000 people, many of them members of Pittsburgh's tight-knit Jewish community, held a protest march against Trump as his visit began, chanting, "Words have meaning", and carrying signs with slogans calling for unity, including: "We build bridges not walls".
