'Everything's at stake' on eve of first Trump-era elections

Youth turnout could hold the key in the US mid terms and threaten Trump's hold on Congress

There may never have been a set of midterm contests with so many vital themes, so many contradictory impulses, so many contrasting campaign memes and so many reasons to doubt any predictions - some for blue wave for the Democrats, others for a red-wave backlash for the Republicans - about how Tuesday's 470 congressional races and 36 races for governors' chairs will turn out.

"The only check right now on the behavioUr of these Republicans is you and your vote".

With opinion polls showing dozens of tight United States congressional and gubernatorial races in Tuesday's election, the current and former presidents said the results would determine what kind of country Americans live in for the next two years. "In the closing weeks of this election we have seen repeated attempts to divide us with rhetoric created to make us angry and to make us fearful", he said. He also defended Obamacare while "claiming to support the law's protections for those with pre-existing conditions". "When people can just lie with abandon, democracy can't work", he told a cheering crowd as he campaigned for Senator Joe Donnelly. If Trump manages to pull off a victory in terms of retaining control of one or both Houses, it will be seen as a validation of his stand that poor migrants and refugees from other countries are a threat to the peaceful life of the American people and send out a clear message to the world on what the original "country of migrants" now thinks on that issue. The midterm elections involve all 435 seats of the House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate, and 36 out of 50 state governors.

The then 47-year-old Democrat, who became the 44th USA president, garnered 365 electoral votes and almost 53 per cent of the popular vote, while his 72-year-old Republican challenger captured 173 electoral votes, more than 45 per cent of the popular vote.

A majority of likely voters (52%) say they consider health care extremely important to their vote for Congress on Tuesday, with immigration and Trump closely behind at 49% each.

Speaking at a rally in Macon, Georgia, the president ramped up his hard-line rhetoric on immigration as he issued warnings about the caravan of migrants heading to the U.S. border with Mexico.

He repeated those themes in Georgia, urging voters to "look at what is marching up - that's an invasion".

But in Indiana, Obama said Republicans were taking credit for the economic renewal that started under his presidency. "I feel really good about things going into Tuesday". "That is a great closing argument in a lot of these Houses races that are within the margin of error", RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel told ABC. Obama's appearance on the campaign trail is his second in three days.

It's a move Democrats hope will thwart Trump's legislative policies.

And while Obama said Democrats would support a "kinder version of America", he did what many Democratic candidates have refrained from doing: directly challenging the president. Democratic Senate incumbents are up for re-election, for example, in North Dakota, West Virginia, and Montana - states Trump carried by 30 percentage points on average two years ago.

As of Sunday morning, nearly 34.4 million people had cast ballots early, according to the Election Project at the University of Florida, which tracks turnout. "These are some very close races and they are in states where Trump won big".
