UN Secretary General asks Sri Lanka's President to allow Parliament vote ASAP

Sri Lanka,Ranil Wickremesinghe,Maithripala Sirisena

Wickremesinghe has refused to accept the dismissal and has remained bunkered at the prime minister s official residence for the past week. But the president's spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said he did still does not expect parliament to open before November 16.

Sri Lanka's newly appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa gestures during the ceremony to assume duties at the Prime Minister office in Colombo.

On Friday, the speaker of parliament said Sirisena had agreed to summon a session on Wednesday next week.

His message to most of the journalists was that he cannot be shaken and that the only way the crisis could be resolved was by convening Parliament.

Tensions have been building between Sirisena and Wickremesinghe for some time on other fronts too, as the president did not approve of economic reforms introduced by the prime minister.

However, Wickremesinghe said the Police had launched an investigation into the allegations and that it was being seriously looked into.

It has two prime ministers, or at least two politicians both laying claim to be the sole legal head of government.

The UNP said that Sirisena's people were "shamelessly trying to buy our MPs over to secure this unconstitutional and illegal seizure of power".

On Saturday, the Tamil National Alliance -an ethnic minority Tamil party- said that it will support a no-confidence motion to be brought against Rajapaksa, after one lawmaker from their party joined Rajapaksa's government.

Sri Lanka regained the GSP plus preferential treatment in 2017.

However, on Thursday evening, General Secretary of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Susil Premajayantha told journalists that no such announcement had been made by the president and parliament would convene as announced on November 16.

On Tuesday, angry protests rocked Sri Lanka's capital as thousands of demonstrators gathered for a rally organised by Wickremesinghe's party against what it said was a "coup" by President Sirisena. Moreover, Wickremesinghe's popularity began to wane after his government signed an agreement giving a Chinese company an 80% stake and a 99-year lease of a failing port, seeing it as a way to avoid defaulting on Chinese loans.

Namal's comments are aimed at persuading the legislators in Sri Lanka's main Tamil party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), to switch their allegiance to Rajapaksa in his bid to prove a majority in Parliament.
