Fox News scolds Sean Hannity for appearing at Trump campaign rally

Media storylines heading into the midterms

But officials stopped short of condemning the act.

Camerota went on to say that Fox News is "having a schizophrenic moment over there trying to figure out what their role over there is supposed to be with the Trump presidency". We have an extraordinary team of journalists helming our coverage tonight and we are extremely proud of their work. A spokesperson for Fox News said the network had addressed the "unfortunate distraction", but did not reveal whether the two commentators were disciplined.

Hannity defended his actions, claiming he was "surprised, yet honored" to be invited onstage and that the stunt was not planned.

Despite Fox's disavowal, the Trump campaign continued to list Hannity as a guest throughout Monday at the link where people could seek tickets to the event. The top-rated cable news host has been the president's most vocal defender.

But Monday night's appearance at Trump's rally was one of the clearest examples to date of Hannity's growing invincibility at the network.

CNN on Tuesday reported that more than a dozen Fox News staffers said they were disappointed by Hannity's decision to participate in a campaign rally in Missouri on Monday night. I am covering final rally for my show.

Hannity's first remark on stage with the President?

"They can play that game, but we can play it better".

Hannity hugged the president when he came onstage and, after echoing Trump's traditional epithets about the media, recited some economic statistics.

One former senior Fox News employee told CNN Business that he had spoken to a number of former colleagues who are still at the network about the matter.

But the White House news conference was also quickly overtaken by Trump's ongoing attacks on the media, as the president repeatedly flashed his temper as he insulted several reporters by name, interrupted their questions, ordered some to sit down and deemed one inquiry "racist". "This is a problem. It's risky for democracy and a threat to a free press".

Hannity has for years flouted the usual standards required of Fox News employees.

It happened nearly immediately after Trump took the stage in Missouri following an introduction from conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, who had warmed the crowd up. When Fox found out in 2010 that the Tea Party had advertised that Hannity would be appearing at one of his fundraising rallies, Fox said it had not approved the arrangement and ordered him back to NY. But Monday night's rally crossed a new line, making explicit what had always been implicit. In the past, Hannity has said that he's a talk show host, not a journalist.

He moved backstage, and with six minutes before the end of his show, Trump appeared for a billed interview that was largely bereft of questions.

Hannity began by pointing directly to the other members of the media in the room.

"I thought it was very close to complete victory", Trump said, adding that he would "almost have to think about" whether he would have preferred Republicans to retain a slim majority in the House instead of their outright loss.

Turner said Hannity has made it "crystal clear" that Trump is "his guy" and that he's willing to "skirt the rules" for the president.

Hope Hicks, chief communications officer for Fox - the soon-to-be parent company of Fox News - did not respond to a Tuesday morning email asking whether Rupert or Lachlan Murdoch, the father and son who control Fox News, had any comment on or approved of Hannity's behavior.
