The camp fire burned down more than 6,700 homes and businesses in Paradise, more structures than any other California wildfire on record.

The so-called Woolsey wildfires are now the deadliest in California history having already claimed 42 lives.

"People think of fires as moving along the ground and catching this tree and that tree, and then that house or whatever", Schuster, a Paradise town council member, said in an interview on ABC News' "Start Here" podcast.

The sheriff said he also has requested three portable morgue teams from the US military, a "disaster mortuary" crew and an unspecified number of cadaver dog units to assist in the search for human remains.

Dan Sauvageau, a developer from Roseville, California, on Sunday raced 90 minutes north to Magalia in Butte County to help a friend evacuate his family of animals - a cat, a dog, three goats (one of them pregnant) and a donkey.

The town, with a population of 27,000 was destroyed by the fire.

The Red Cross is seeking donations for the numerous evacuation centers they've opened for California residents seeking refuge.

More than 200 people were still missing as of Monday, Honea said. Of those cases, 231 individuals had turned up safe, he said.

The increased death toll of Camp Fire brought the statewide toll to 44.

Microsoft Studios to acquire inXile Entertainment

The Camp Fire, which incinerated the town of Paradise, California, is now the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history.

Both fires have spread with an erratic intensity that has strained resources and kept firefighters struggling to keep up with the flames while catching many residents by surprise.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fires.

The dead have been found in burned-out cars, in the smoldering ruins of their homes, or next to their vehicles, apparently overcome by smoke and flames before they could jump in behind the wheel and escape.

The Woolsey Fire burned 93,662 acres as of Monday evening, including 83 percent of all National Parks Service land in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, according to Cal Fire.

Meanwhile in Southern California, at least 435 buildings were torched by the Woolsey and Hill fires that ignited on Thursday afternoon and ripped across almost 100,000 acres in Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

More than 220 people remain unaccounted for in Northern California as whipping winds and tinder-dry conditions threaten more areas through the rest of the week. The blaze was only 15% contained. A TV news crew located Martin Sheen safe on Friday night at Zuma Beach in Malibu, where he said the couple were fine and "probably going to sleep in the auto tonight".

The Republican president has previously blamed California officials for fires and threatened to withhold funding, saying the state should do more to remove rotten trees and other debris that fuel blazes.
