Firefighters battle blazes on two fronts in California, 50 dead

The Woolsey Fire burns along the ridgeline off of Cornell Road near Paramount Ranch on the morning

Together, the two fires have been blamed for 44 deaths and have consumed more than 200,000 acres of land, as of around midday Tuesday.

In less than one week, the Camp Fire has already destroyed more structures than any fire California had before it: more than 7,800 homes and businesses are gone. It also surpassed the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire, which killed 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots firefighting crew.

The fire is the most destructive in the state's history.

"Despite wildfire being present, we've seen an astronomical level of housing development in the WUI", said University of Nevada assistant professor Shawn McCoy, whose study examined the tendency of people to buy homes in areas that had previously suffered wildfires.

Before the fires started, both PG&E and SCE had warned customers that risky weather - high winds, combined with very dry conditions - could cause power outages; they also also warned that they might be forced to turn off power in parts of their systems because of safety concerns.

To the south, Woolsey Fire has blackened almost 94,000 acres and was also 30 percent contained as of Monday night, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire).

And if it seems like wildfires are getting worse, they are.

"In many circumstances, without rapid DNA technology, it's just such a lengthy process", says Frank DePaolo, a deputy commissioner of the New York City medical examiners' office.

Butte County Sheriff Honea said that some remains may not be found before residents start returning to their intact homes. Fire officials don't expect it to be fully under control until the end of the month at the earliest.

"Probably situations where there should be logging in some scenarios, a moratorium on building in some places".

"The air quality will be poor" especially in the mornings, warned Aviva Braun, a National Weather Service meteorologist, but it will get better in the afternoons. The flames reportedly reached up to 2,000 degrees.

Authorities say they don't yet know when residents will be able to get closer to their homes.

Map of the areas affected by the Peshtigo Fire in 1871. Four other people also died. According to the Forest History Society, the wildfire killed 87 people, mostly firefighters, and is believed to be the largest wildfire in us history.

In response to the first lawsuit, PG&E issues a statement saying, "There has been no determination of the cause of the fire".

On Tuesday morning it ripped through 50 acres in 30 minutes as hurricane-force winds of 85mph sparked a new flare-up. Investigators have not determined the cause of the blaze.

According to the Weather Service, the smoke for the Great Fire spread a third of the way around the world - producing some dark days in the USA and Canada.

Madison Fire Department Capt. Ellis Johnston is one of those firefighters. The blaze caused over a $1 billion in destruction and began in the Cleveland National Forest by a hunter signaling for help.

Unfortunately, southern California's seasonal Santa Ana winds have prevailed in the area lately.
