Microsoft Rolls Out Windows 10 ‘Patch Tuesday’ Cumulative Updates

Microsoft Re-releasing Windows 10 October Update (1809) Today

There are no new features in any of these updates, but there are system and security improvements as well as bug fixes.

As per usual, most of the critical flaws - those that can be exploited by malware or miscreants without any help from users - reside in Microsoft's Web browsers Edge and Internet Explorer. For Windows Server guidance, follow the instructions in KB4072698.

Of course, if the target has Adobe Reader or Acrobat installed, it might be easier for attackers to achieve that log in.

Users with Windows Update active will be automatically prompted to upgrade to Windows 10 Version 1809 as it rolls out, but Microsoft advises that those looking for it ' wait until the feature update is offered to your device automatically' rather than forcing a manual upgrade. Adobe said it plans to end support for the plugin in 2020. You'll have to go into the settings menu to access it.

Microsoft has started rolling out Windows 10 October Update, once again after it was pulled off due to massive bugs. In addition to extensive internal validation, we have taken time to closely monitor feedback and diagnostic data from our Windows Insiders and from millions of devices on the Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

The April Update had the fastest Windows 10 update rollout velocity but given the issues with the October Update, it's no surprise that Microsoft is taking a measured approach this time around. For all other Windows OS users, if you'd rather be alerted to new updates when they're available so you can choose when to install them, there's a setting for that in Windows Update.

It's also worth noting that if you are still on the Anniversary update (version 1703) you will get KB4467691 which essentially includes the same fixes as 1709.

The company will also build and release an Update status dashboard for Windows, "to provide more information on any issues that lead to update blocks". Last month, the company detailed the source of that problem and now it is back with a vow to do better in the future.
