Astronomers Discover New Frozen Planet Near Earth

Barnard's star b's surface

The next closest exoplanet (a planet outside our solar system) is Proxima b, which orbits the red dwarf Proxima Centauri. Now, an global team led by researchers from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has found a cold Super-Earth orbiting around the Barnard´s star, the second closest star system to Earth. A team of astronomers has revived interest in Barnard's Star, which hangs in space just six light years away.

Lead astronomer Dr Ignasi Ribas, from the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia in Spain, said the team had studied 771 measurements.

Just six light-years from Earth, the second closest star system to our sun hosts a frozen super-Earth, according to new findings by an global team of researchers. Researchers believe that it is an ice desert without liquid water, a hostile environment where the average temperature is close to -170 degrees.

This is the first time a planet as small and distant from its star as this one has been detected using what's called the radial velocity technique.

However, its characteristics make it an excellent target for direct imaging using the next generation of instruments.

That seemed to be the case when a team of researchers started checking archival data for Barnard's star images. If there is a planet orbiting the star, three times the mass of Earth, the same technique espoused by van de Kamp should reveal its presence.

For most of human history, it was thought that the positions of the stars were fixed, but to modern astronomers, Barnard's Star is virtually zipping across the sky.

In mankind´s bid to map the planets in the night sky, most historic research has focused on brighter, newer stars, which produce more light and increase the chances of scientists noticing anything orbiting them.

Emergency dispatch indicated that a call came in as a patient who was undergoing cardiac arrest, the report said. Questlove , 47, also tweeted his condolences and shock, writing, "Yo man... heart goes out to the family".

Previous searches for a planet around Barnard's Star have had disappointing results - this recent breakthrough was possible only by combining measurements from several high-precision instruments mounted on telescopes all over the world.

This discovery pushes the bounds of what we can do with our best current astronomical instrumentation, so the authors are understandably cautious in claiming a "planet candidate", rather than a confirmed discovery. It orbits its host star every 233 days. This visualisation shows the nearest stars to the Sun, and highlights the location of Barnard's Star.

Red dwarfs are stars more or less like the Sun - in that they fuse hydrogen into helium in their cores to generate energy - but they are smaller, dimmer, lower mass, and cooler.

The radial velocity method was developed in the 1990s and has been steadily improving ever since, Ribas said.

And the researchers also found something else in the data: faint evidence of another planet, which would be known as Barnard's Star c.

Even if Barnard's star b is rocky, life would have a hard time taking root on its chilly surface.

"HARPS played a vital part in this project", said Guillem Anglada Escudé of Queen Mary University of London and the co-lead scientist on the team, said in the statement. As larger and more refined observatories are about to come online in the 2020s, it may be easier to distinguish the light reflected from a planet from the light that comes from its host star.

The star is named after the American astronomer E E Barnard, who measured properties of its motion in 1916.
