British Prime Minister May warns ousting her won't make Brexit talks easier

Stephen Barclay Amber Rudd Brexit Work and Pensions Secretary

She is expected to say that there is "an intense week of negotiations ahead of us", adding: "During that time I expect us to hammer out the full and final details of the framework that will underpin our future relationship and I am confident that we can strike a deal at the council that I can take back to the House of Commons".

At the end of a bruising week for the Prime Minister, she used an interview with the Daily Mail to tell her critics their alternative plans for Brexit would not solve the main problem - the North Ireland/Ireland border backstop arrangement.

In her keynote speech, Mrs May said: "We are not talking about political theory, but the reality of people's lives and livelihoods".

Clark said the extension would only be requested if a trade deal between the European Union and United Kingdom had not been finalised by the end of the current transition period, which is scheduled to last until December 2020.

In a letter to Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee, Mr Rees-Mogg said Mrs May's deal "has turned out to be worse than anticipated and fails to meet the promises given to the nation by the Prime Minister, either on her own account or on behalf of us all in the Conservative Party manifesto".

As furious Conservative rebels try to gather the numbers to trigger a no-confidence vote, May insisted she hadn't considered quitting.

He said "Labour will not countenance a no-deal Brexit", which could cause upheaval for businesses and people.

Ms McVey, who was promoted to the Cabinet by Mrs May in January, was reported to have been close to tears as she tried to force a vote on the Brexit deal in Wednesday's Cabinet.

Even if May sees off such a challenge, she still has to get the deal approved by Parliament.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called on her to "withdraw this half-baked deal".

This could be necessary if both sides fail to reach a full agreement on the future relationship between Brussels and the United Kingdom, and could be a replacement for activating the so-called "backstop" arrangements to keep the Irish border open.

He also revealed that he had not yet read all of the 585 page draft European Union withdrawal agreement.

One pro-Brexit Conservative lawmaker, Simon Clarke, urged wavering colleagues Monday to join the rebellion, saying "it is quite clear to me that the captain is driving the ship at the rocks". He added: "We must make it understood today that this deal which is now on the table is the best one possible".

Instead, both sides could discuss creating new unobtrusive checks away from the frontier, he said.

In Brussels, Austria's minister for Europe, Gernot Bluemel, struck a more melancholy tone. "Otherwise we've got the cliff edge in March next year".

Asked if the 48 figure had been reached, May said: "As far as I know, no it has not".

The appointments followed the resignations of Dominic Raab and Esther McVey over the Brexit plan and came amid mounting expectation that the Prime Minister's leadership will be put to a vote of MPs.

"Control of our money, so we can decide for ourselves how to spend it".

The current text of the draft Withdrawal Agreement, which May presented to her Cabinet last week, states the transition period may be extended once to an ambiguous date of "20XX".
