Ivanka Trump broke email rules in same way as Hillary Clinton

"[Ivanka's emails] weren't classified like Hillary Clinton, they weren't deleted like Hillary Clinton who deleted 33,000, she wasn't hiding, she wasn't doing anything to hide her emails", Trump said.

"The White House never gave us the information we requested", Cummings, who authored an update to the Presidential and Federal Records Act signed into law in 2014, said in a statement.

The issue resurfaced this week when The Washington Post reported that the president's daughter, while a top White House adviser, sent hundreds of emails about government business from a personal email account previous year.

"When she entered the government, she was given a government email account for official use".

US President Donald Trump acknowledged Tuesday (Nov 20) that his daughter had used a private e-mail account for government business, but rejected parallels between Ivanka Trump and Hillary Clinton as "fake news". He called her "Crooked Hillary" and led chants of "Lock her up!". "No emails were ever deleted'".

Cummings is expected to be chairman of the oversight committee when his party takes the reins in the House next year.

Ms. Trump had told people in the White House that she was unaware of the rules when she was using her personal account.

It is not illegal for White House officials to use personal email accounts for government business.

Ivanka Trump past year used a personal email account to discuss or relay official White House business, according to emails released by a nonpartisan watchdog group.

In a statement, Trump's lawyer blasted "misinformation" by media critics attempting to draw a parallel between the president's daughter and Clinton.

The use of a private email account for official business could violate the Presidential Records Act, because Ivanka used her private email not only while she was a volunteer at the White House, but afterwards as well.

The White House had no comment on Ivanka Trump's email practices.

Peter Mirijanian, spokesman for Ivanka's ethics counsel Abbe Lowell, responded the report by saying she "sometimes used her private account", but that it was mainly just for logistics and her family's schedule.

After Ms. Trump's personal e-mail use was discovered, Mr. Lowell helped sort out what e-mails qualified as official records that needed to be kept for posterity, The Post reported.

Before becoming secretary of state, Mrs Clinton set up an email server at her home in Chappaqua, New York, that she used for all work and personal emails during her four years in office.

Anthony Scaramucci, who was briefly White House communications director in 2017, told CNN on Tuesday: "I certainly think it's hypocritical, if Ivanka was interviewed about it she would have to say it was a mistake".

Horowitz also revealed that former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok used his personal email account for government business.
