The Match: Phil Mickelson birdies fourth extra hole to beat Tiger Woods

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods at 'The Match' afterparty

On Friday afternoon, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods took the course at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas for a winner-take-all $9 million match.

Mickelson did not, in fact, birdie the hole.

On the next hole, a long par-5, Woods, 42, missed a birdie putt that would have tied the match.

The victory came after 22 holes of finely balanced play between two of golf's greatest players and organisers even had to call on artificial lighting to ensure the game reached a conclusion in bitter cold conditions.

"Lefty" lost $200,000 to Tiger Woods on Friday when he shot a par in the first hole of "The Match".

Woods again went long from the tee but received a let-off when Mickelson missed from 18 feet, and the left-hander spurned another opportunity from six feet moments later after Woods again failed to find the putting surface.

Ivanka Trump broke email rules in same way as Hillary Clinton
Lowell helped sort out what e-mails qualified as official records that needed to be kept for posterity, The Post reported . Cummings is expected to be chairman of the oversight committee when his party takes the reins in the House next year.

At Tuesday's pre-event press conference, Mickelson had bet $100,000 he would birdie the par-four first hole, Woods said double it and the wager was accepted. After he pitched out his third shot, Mickelson missed his long birdie putt.

Mickelson's second ended in a plugged pie in a bunker short of the green, and the water hazard, while Woods layed up after a pulled drive and wedged to seven feet before his opponent splashed out to 30 feet.

But Mickelson tied him with a birdie putt at the 14th then went ahead when Woods bogeyed the 15th.

However, Woods chipped in for an unlikely birdie and Mickelson could not match it from 12 feet, meaning the match was all square heading to the 18th. "I did not want to have that match end on that hole", said Woods.

Tiger smirked and commented, "That hurts the pocket".
