Snow Storm Slams Midwest, Causes Thousands Of Flights To Be Canceled

At Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, 750 flights were canceled and another 439 were delayed Monday, FlightAware reported.

Hundreds of flights have been grounded and major highways are closed, too, bring a huge travel snarl to the end of Thanksgiving weekend.

"It's going to be messy", said Todd Kluber, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

A winter storm warning has been extended for Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kendall, Lake and Will counties through 9 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

"We strongly recommend that you postpone travel plans, if possible; however, if you must be on the road, make sure your vehicle's emergency kit is stocked, your gas tank is full and your cell phone and charger are with you and someone knows your travel plans", the declaration reads.

Disruptions were still ongoing on Monday morning, with almost 500 flights canceled and 200 delayed.

Many were supposed to be routed through Chicago or Kansas City - areas forecast to be hit hard by the storm.

Heavy snows and strong winds moved through the region Sunday evening, causing risky travel conditions on a busy day on the roads.

The highest recorded wind gust during the storm was 58 miles per hour Sunday morning at the Russell Municipal Airport according to the National Weather Service.

The Monday morning commute here will be slow and treacherous - snow and winds persisting closer-in during the early-morning hours, and then gradually diminishing as the center of low pressure fades off to the east. Lake shore flooding will be likely right along and just inland of the IL and Indiana Lake Michigan shoreline.

Areas north of M-59 are under a Winter Storm Warning until 3 p.m. for 5-8 inches of snow and blowing snow most of the day.

Airlines were forced to cancel or delay almost 6,000 flights on Sunday as a risky winter storm blanketed parts of the Midwest with heavy snow. That included semitrailer trucks jackknifed across the highway.

The Coast Guard issued a warning Sunday afternoon, urging people to stay away from the shoreline and remain off nearby paths, as first responders will not be able to launch rescue crews due to the high waves.

Whiteout conditions closed Interstate 70 through most of Kansas nearly all-day Sunday. As the low pressure passes, areas behind the system will continue to see more snow through Monday evening with up to a foot possible before the skies clear.

But Illinois State Police District 17 posted on Twitter a map from Illinois Storm Chasers showing a potential for 12-15 inches of snow for northwestern Bureau County and the Quad Cities, the possibility of 9-12 inches for Mendota and 6-9 inches for southern La Salle County. Forecasters predict more than a foot of snow is likely in southeast Nebraska, northeast Kansas, northwest Missouri and southwest Iowa.

The storm was forecast to hit parts of northern IN and southern MI early Monday before moving further East. He said rain will give way to heavy snowfall and "near whiteout conditions" that would make for unsafe travel.
