Hyde-Smith tops Espy after racially-tinged Senate campaign

Voters cast their ballots for Mississippi Senate candidates Cindy Hyde-Smith and Mike Espy Tuesday.

Hyde-Smith and Espy faced off in the runoff after earning the most votes in the special election nonpartisan "jungle primary", which goes to a runoff when no candidate earns a majority of the votes. Espy would have been the first African-American senator elected from MS since Reconstruction.

She also joked about making it "a little more difficult" for liberals to vote. Under all circumstances, in an incredibly bitter race, Espy remained collected and did not give in to the controversy swirling around Hyde-Smith.

With all 35 Senate races decided, the Republicans hold a 53-47 edge - a pickup of two seats.

In fact, Manfred has called on the FEC to create new guidelines which would make it easier for donors to take their money back should a incident arise like Hyde-Smith's remarks about attending a 'public hanging'.

'Also the Major League Baseball commissioner donated the max he could to her confederate a** campaign and that was after her crack mouth said she would attend a public hanging, ' wrote Schumer. A two-term state agriculture commissioner, the Republican was viewed as the best bet to head off a primary challenger from conservative firebrand Chris McDaniel, a state senator who had nearly knocked off Cochran in 2014.

"Congratulations to Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith on your big WIN in the Great State of Mississippi".

Hyde-Smith tops Espy after racially-tinged Senate campaign

"The reason we won is because Mississippians know me and they know my heart", she told her supporters. Photos on her Facebook page from 2014 showed her wearing a Confederate soldier's hat during a tour of the Jefferson Davis Home and Presidential Library.

Hyde-Smith's visible backing from her national party and from Donald J. Trump (who appeared at two rallies with her on the eve of the runoff) pulled her through, even though Espy improved on his November 6 performance.

But all that was not enough to fell her in a state with the most racially polarized voting in the country.

Cindy Hyde-Smith is returning to Washington as a solidly loyal Trump supporter.

By a margin of 55% to 45% with 77 percent of precincts reporting, she bested Democrat Mike Espy in a closer than expected race that stirred up Mississippi's complicated racial history. Espy, who is black, called her comments "reprehensible". During a televised debate nine days after the video was publicized, she apologized to "anyone that was offended by my comments". He tried to recreate a coalition that propelled Democrat Doug Jones to a Senate win in neighboring Alabama a year ago by energizing black voters, particularly women, and winning support from white swing voters.

Espy denied the charge and said "we all know what came out of your mouth". However, in 2018, it is deeply troubling to hear the term "public hanging" being used in this context by a senator, particularly given the division in our politics.

"While not the results we were hoping for, I am still so proud of this very historic campaign", said Espy.
