President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participated in the 96th National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on the Ellipse outside the White House on Wednesday, with the White House grounds fully decked out for the holidays.

One insider previously shared that Melania loves the winter holidays and that she had been planning this year's decorations and theme ever since August.

She didn't lash out at her critics, nor did she back down from her decision.

After her remarks, Mrs. Trump was interviewed by CRTV Host Eric Bolling.

"I hope everybody will come over and visit it", she added.

Donald Trump took to Twitter to write: 'On behalf of FLOTUS Melania and the whole Trump family, I want to wish all of you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Snow Storm Slams Midwest, Causes Thousands Of Flights To Be Canceled

The first lady has said many times that the scrutiny did not bother her and told the audience that media outlets "focus on unimportant stuff, really". I think they look fantastic (applause).

The White House released a video showing the first lady walking through hallways of the "people's house" and examining various Christmas decorations, including a hallway full of blood-red Christmas trees.

"We are in [the] 21st century and everybody has a different taste".

At the panel event, Mrs Trump also spoke about her son Barron, saying the 12-year-old is "all into sports" so did not spend time on social media.

The first lady said that she knew she would be criticised about her "Be Best" initiative to promote healthy living and encourage kindness, respect and positive online behaviour.

Almost 48,000 people died previous year from overdoses involving opioids.
