NASA's Mars Lander Is Going To Have A Very Busy Two Years

At the minimum, there's an eight-minute communication lag between Mars and Earth. These initial images are grainy because the dust shields haven't been removed from the camera lenses yet.

"Touchdown confirmed!" a flight controller called out just before 3 p.m. EST, setting off jubilation among scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, who had waited in white-knuckle suspense for word to reach across 100 million miles (160 million kilometers) of space.

"Today, we successfully landed on Mars for the eighth time in human history".

The solar arrays are key to helping InSight function. We are just about due north of Curiosity, which actually makes it a little bit of a traffic jam on Mars in the sense that the data that we bring back from the surface of Mars is relayed through basically telecommunication orbiters. On a clear day, the probe gets about 600 to 700 watts from the panels, and even when dust settles on the panels - which could be a common occurrence on Mars - they can provide up to 200 to 300 watts of power for the probe. Additionally, the mission teamhopes to have more images in approximately five hours.

"No there's not. I mean, this is this is not a rover mission, it's not a spacecraft that's built to move itself around on the ground - it's built to be a stationary scientific station as soon as it touches down".

The suite of geophysical instruments will take measurements of Mars' internal activity like seismology and the wobble as the sun and its moons tug on the planet. "It takes thousands of steps to go from the top of the atmosphere to the surface, and each one of them has to work perfectly [for InSight] to be a successful mission".

InSight's primary instrument is a French-built seismometer, created to record the slightest vibrations from "marsquakes" and meteor impacts around the planet. It will lift a seismometer and heat-flow probe from the deck and places them on the surface.

NASA will unveil the names of future partners chosen to send astronauts back to the Moon, for the first time in almost five decades.

"An ideal location for our Mars mole would be one that is as sandy as possible and does not contain any rocks", HP3 operations manager Christian Krause said. This will include taking planetary temperatures, investigating what the planet's various rock layers are composed of, and using radio transmissions to generate data on Mars' axis. However, this probe will focus on Mars' interior, trying to understand its core.

"It is wonderful news that the InSight spacecraft has landed safely on Mars".

The lander is powered by two solar panels which unfold on landing.

Earlier research unit InSight of the American space Agency NASA gave the Mars first the planet, but he was not quite good because of the dusty glass of the device.
