CAF strips Cameroon of 2019 Africa cup of Nations hosting rights

Cameroon’s Sakava Sangaola Moise and milions others were shocked after CAF removed the 2019 AFCON Hosting rights from them

The executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the decision on Friday after a lengthy meeting in Accra, Ghana.

A new bidding process was opened with countries interested in hosting Africa's top soccer tournament, which starts in just six months, invited to apply by the end of December.

CAF had considered relieving Cameroon of the hosting rights past year but pulled the breaks, warning the country to double up efforts on preparations. Morocco replaced Kenya as hosts.

"After having considered that a simple postponement of the tournament was impossible because of Caf's contractual commitments, and the importance of maintaining the competition calendar, the Caf Executive Committee decided that the next edition of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations could not be held in Cameroon".

A report by Caf's Security Inspection Team became the cul-de-sac for Cameroon, whose national team Indomitable Lions would have been defending the trophy in front of home fans.

Local and worldwide news outlets have repeatedly speculated this year that Morocco might replace Cameroon.

The newly expande24-team tournament will kick-off June 2019.

Moroccan sports television channel Arriyadia said that CAF has "officially" stripped Cameroon of the rights.

The 2017 finals were originally due to be held in South Africa, but they had swapped with Libya, which was then also unable to host and Gabon took over.

At that time, a report by the last inspection team to Cameroon revealed "a significant delay as far as the delivery of infrastructure is concerned".
